Course Details

This is a general qualification for entry into sectors of the animal care and management industry, where workers provide care for animals in workplaces such as animal shelters, kennels, catteries, sanctuaries and veterinary clinics. At this level, work takes place under direct supervision within clearly defined guidelines for work activities.

No occupational licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication. However, individual units of competency may specify relevant licensing, legislative and/or regulatory requirements. Users of this qualification must refer to the relevant state or territory jurisdiction for details.

It is advantageous, but not compulsory that whilst undertaking this qualification the learner should seek to gain a period of work placement or work experience in an animal care environment and/or workplace
Face-to-face classes have access to the simulated workplaces (campus animal houses) on TAFE premises. The simulated environment is ongoing throughout the course as practical activities are taught and assessed.
Demonstration of skills and performance evidence requirements in a simulated environment on TAFE premises, will reflect current industry standards and activities.

Additionally, whilst undertaking this qualification the learner may also seek to gain a period of work placement or work experience in an animal care environment and/or workplace. In most occasion?s students undertaking veterinary nursing units ACMVET202, ACMVET203 may undertake placement due to the specialised nature of these units. Assessment for all course units is performed on TAFE premises, but additional assessing for ACMVET202, ACMVET203 units could occur during a workplace visit also (for example same task assessed but on a different date and location/ environment).

This is a Part Time Day Face to Face course. You will need to attend approximately 9.3 hours of class, over 1 day a week, for 19 weeks.

You may also be required to complete approximately 18.9 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including Assessment Preparation & Private Study.

The Certificate II in Animal Studies is an introductory course into the animal care industry. This covers basic animal care including subject areas on; identification, handling, feeding, WHS and workplace communications. There are many potential job roles at this level in the animal care industry for those willing and able to do the physical side of the work e.g.:- Animal shelter attendant, Kennel hand, Cattery attendant, Pet shop attendant.

The Certificate II Animal Studies also offers a pathway for further learning such as; ACM30117 Certificate III in Animal Studies, ACM30417 Certificate III in Companion Animal Services, ACM30617 Certificate III in Pet Grooming and ACM40412 Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing.

There are no entry requirements for this qualification however, local entry requirements do exist for this course which include; it is highly recommended that whilst undertaking this qualification the learner should seek to gain a period of work placement or work experience in an animal care environment and/or workplace. Students enrolled in the blended delivery option are required to source one working day per week in a suitable animal care workplace.


This course offering is designed for people who are entry-level students, some may have a disability. Disability consultants will be contacted if student indicates they may need assistance during the course. Communication is undertaken with disability consultant, section and student to determine this. During this communication aspects such as reasonable adjustment will be discussed for both delivery and assessment.
Students in this group are wishing to enter the Animal Care industry. Some students are studying this as a pre-requisite to ACM40412/ ACM40418 Certificate IV Veterinary Nursing.


There are additional learning and study tools available for this course, including -

  • Support is based on discussion with students and enrolment details.
  • A one-on-one interview can be undertaken and if deemed applicable, a meeting will be arranged to discuss the LLN assistance that TAFE NSW can provide to the learner, with a view to creating an individual training and learning plan that best addresses the learner?s LLN needs.
  • Every effort is made by TAFE NSW staff to ensure a successful outcome for enrolled learners. TAFE NSW offers a free tutorial support service to all TAFE NSW learners and further support services include:

  • Work Placement Support including helping the student identify and secure a work placement, supportive conversations with a teacher or Assessor/ESO, debriefing/ mentoring by an Assessor/ESO etc

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
