Course Details

This is a general qualification for entry into sectors of the animal care and management industry, where workers provide care for animals in workplaces such as animal shelters, kennels, catteries, sanctuaries and veterinary clinics. At this level, work takes place under direct supervision within clearly defined guidelines for work activities.

No occupational licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication. However, individual units of competency may specify relevant licensing, legislative and/or regulatory requirements. Users of this qualification must refer to the relevant state or territory jurisdiction for details.

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • Reasonably physically fit to undertake the practical components of this course, have direct contact with live animals and be involved in the care, feeding, watering, health check and record keeping in the animal care facility.
  • Those that are visually or hearing impaired may not meet the WHS requirements of the animal care facility to complete all of the practical components of the course.
  • Students should have reasonable computer skills in simple word processing and computer navigation, be able to do simple mathematical calculations and communicate effectively with others.
  • Students must arrange work placement in an animal care facility such as a pet shop, dogs or cats home, rescue shelter, groomers, dog walkers, Wildlife Park, vet clinic, zoo, aquarium or breeding/boarding facility and have access to at least 2 animal species before you enrol in this course.
  • You will be required to complete at least 144 hours of work placement and complete the practical skill competencies in this course. Some individuals may need more than 144 hours to gain the practical skills required. Participants must be reasonably physically fit to undertake this placement and be directly involved in the care of live animals to meet the competencies.

This is a Part Time Day Face to Face course. You will need to attend approximately 6 hours of class, over 2 days a week, for 36 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 3 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 8 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including work placement in an animal care facility, assignment preparation, private study and research (independent study, research, practice and assignments).


This course offering is designed for people who:

  • Are seeking to gain competencies required by workers to operate at the assistant level in various job roles related to companion animal care.
  • This course will be delivered part time over a year.
  • Students undertaking this qualification often intend to progress to Certificate III in Captive Animals, Certificate IV in Companion Animal Services or Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing.

This course is currently scheduled on Monday and Tuesday from 9:00am to 12:00pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.


This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you are:

  • Students must have arranged work placement in an animal care facility before enrolment. This placement can be located in a pet shop, dogs or cats home, rescue shelter, groomers, dog walkers, wildlife park, vet clinic, zoo, aquarium or breeding/boarding facility etc and you must have access to at least two animal species.

  • You will need this placement to complete the practical skill competencies in this course and participants must be reasonably physically fit to undertake this placement and be directly involved in the care of live animals.

  • You will be required to supply proof of this work placement before finalising your enrolment. This proof should be in the form or a letter or email from you facility confirming your start date, hours per week, duties and have the contact details of a supervisor.
