  • Access to an animal care facility where you can gain practical skills, evidenced through a signed letter with photos

TAFE NSW also offers the Certificate III in Animal Studies as a traineeship. In addition to meeting the above requirements, trainees must:

  • Be employed in the animal services industry as this course is delivered in the workplace

WORK PLACEMENT

Work placement provides you with opportunities to practice responding to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.

During your course you may undertake a mandatory 8 hours of work placement with a suitable industry employer.

You are responsible for arranging your own work placement. Our team can offer support and guidance to assist you.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To be enrolled in this course it is highly recommended that whilst undertaking this qualification the learner should seek to gain a period of work placement or work experience in an animal care environment and/or workplace. Where a student does not have access to a workplace, they may demonstrate skills and performance evidence requirements in a simulated environment that is reflective of industry.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a face to face part time course. You will need to attend approximately 7.1 hours of class, over 1 day a week, for 1 year.

You may also be required to complete approximately 10 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including unstructured learning we incorporate with the use of Moodle and TEAMS tutorials in addition at private study, assignment preparation, work experience and independent research.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

This course offering is designed for people who are wishing to enter the Animal Care industry and have a general interest in animal care and the management industry, where workers provide care for animals in workplaces such as animal shelters, kennels, catteries, sanctuaries and veterinary clinics. At this level, work takes place under direct supervision within clearly defined guidelines for work activities.

Some students are studying this as a pre-requisite to ACM40412 Certificate IV Veterinary Nursing. Reasonable adjustment for learners of this cohort will be addressed on an individual basis as required.

Learners in this cohort will select electives from the elective list; elective units must be relevant to job outcomes in animal studies and must be chosen to ensure the integrity of the qualification outcome at AQF level 2.

Support is based on a review of the applicants RUReady assessment LLN skills through written tasks and a one-on-one interview and if deemed applicable, a meeting will be arranged to discuss the LLN assistance that TAFE NSW can provide to the learner, with a view to creating an individual training and learning plan that best addresses the learners LLN needs.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
