Course Details

This qualification is a general industry qualification for persons operating at pre-trade level and undertaking animal care functions in a captive animal facility or institution.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication. However, an individual unit of competency may specify relevant licensing, legislative and/or regulatory requirements. Specific determination should be sought through the relevant State or Territory.

When you study with TAFE NSW, we want you to succeed. Entry requirements allow us to make sure that you have the right pre-existing knowledge and skills to achieve your chosen qualification. You will need to provide evidence that you meet the requirements listed in this section.

There are no Training Package entry requirements for this qualification.

It is assumed that you have literacy and numeracy skills at Cert II level for success in this course. Contact your TAFE NSW campus if you have any questions about your suitability.

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you are:

  • Students must have completed Certificate II Animal Studies or higher animal care qualification to enrol in this course. In addition you must have arranged work placement of at least 8 hours per week in a captive animal facility such as a zoo,wildlife park or public aquarium before enrolment. You will need this placement to complete the practical skill competencies in this course and participants must be reasonably physically fit to undertake this placement and be directly involved in the care of live animals. You will be required to supply proof of this work placement before finalising your enrolment. This proof should be in the form or a letter or email from you facility confirming your start date, hours per week, duties and have the contact details of a supervisor. You may also attend 2 extended overnight excursions of approximately 3 days each.


    To successfully complete this course, you will need:
  • Students must be reasonably physically fit to undertake the practical components of this course. Those that are visually or hearing impaired may not meet the WHS requirements of the captive animal facility to complete all of the practical components of the course. Students should have reasonable computer skills in word processing and simple navigation. Students will also be required to give 2 public talks to meet the assessment requirements of a core unit of competence.
  • Students must have arranged work placement in a captive animal facility such as a zoo, wildlife park or public aquarium before enrolment. You will need this placement to complete the practical skill competencies in this course and participants must be reasonably physically fit to undertake the practical components of the course. STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a part time day face to face course. You will need to attend approximately 6.8 hours of class, over 1 days a week, for 36 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 5 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 10 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including work placement in a captive animal care facility, assignment preparation, private study and research (independent study, research, practice and assignments).

This course offering is designed for people who:

  • This qualification is a general industry qualification for persons operating at pre-trade level and undertaking animal care functions in a captive animal facility or institution and is part of the Animal Care and Management Training Package. The qualification will be used predominantly by people seeking to enter or who have already been working as trainee keepers, assistant keeper, animal care attendant or wildlife animal carer. Some candidates may already have completed other animal care qualifications such as the Certificate II/III Animal Studies, Certificate IV Veterinary Nursing or Certificate IV in Companion Animal Services. Students that have completed these animal care qualifications may be eligible for recognition (RPL) of some units of competence. This qualification will be a part time qualification over 12 months.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

You may also attend 2 extended overnight excursions of approximately 3 days each. Students pay for their own accommodation and meals while on excursions. This will be an approximate cost of $55 per night accommodation. Transport to the excursion venue is arranged by TAFE.
