Work placement

Work placement provides you with opportunities to respond to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.

Materials needed

To complete this course, the following materials are required:

  • You will need to provide for yourself the following resources which you will keep when you complete your study:

    • Recommended textbook 'Aspinall' - cost is $200
    • Vet nursing pack
    • Fob watch, scissors, stethoscope, and thermometer
    • Bandaging materials, specimen containers/tubes
    • PPE kit

Additional entry requirements

To make sure this delivery option is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

  • To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you:

    • hold a Certificate II in Animal Studies or higher, or equivalent
    • students must have work placement arrangements of a minimum of 480 hours in a veterinary practice / clinic / hospital.
  • Students must provide evidence of confirmation of work placement prior to enrolment in the form of a signed letter from a veterinary practice. Students who are unable to provide evidence of work placement will not be allowed to enrol into the course. Students whose work placements are made unavailable during the course must find other suitable work placement to meet the TGA qualification and unit requirements.

  • There are TAFE NSW entry requirements to ensure that students are best equipped to successfully complete the course:

    • Students have the same physical capacity for veterinary nursing/ animal care and management work as when they were undertaking the prerequisite qualification or the demonstration of equivalent skills
  • Students must provide:

    • Computer or similar device with internet connections.
    • Pen and paper.
  • Students must also provide some of their own Personal Protective Equipment during the course. These PPE are:

    • appropriate footwear such as closed shoes
    • appropriate clothing such as full-length trousers and sleeved tops where required

Units Units taught in this course

Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 21 units of competency, including 17 core and 4 speciality units.
