The nationally recognised Certificate III in Horticulture will jump-start your career as a sought-after horticulturalist in a growing industry. Traineeship

TAFE NSW also offers the Certificate III in Horticulture as a traineeship. To be eligible to enrol in the course as a trainee you must:

  • Be employed in the horticulture industry as this course is delivered in the workplace
  • Have a signed traineeship contract

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

Two elective units from this course meet licensing requirements to use agricultural chemicals.

Once you complete these units you will be eligible to apply for chemical users licence through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The Pesticides Act 1999 requires you to hold this licence to purchase and use chemicals in a commercial setting.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

To be prepared for this course, we recommend you have:

  • An interest in the horticulture industry and/or currently employed in the industry
  • Physical fitness to lift heavy materials, work on your feet for long periods, climb ladders to prune trees, and dig holes in preparation for seedbeds and planting trees
  • A keen eye for detail
  • Good communication skills
  • The ability to work in a team
  • Intermediate computer skills
  • The ability to research and investigate different topics using public digital databases

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you are:

  • an apprentice (you will work in industry and study at the same time)
  • employed full time
  • signed up with an Apprentice Network Provider and have a Training Plan Proposal
  • seeking to gain skills and knowledge to become a qualified Horticulturist after successful completion

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a part time day course. You will need to attend approximately 7 hours of class, 1 day a week for 2 years.

You may also be required to complete approximately 7 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including assignments, projects, worksheets

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
