Course Details

This qualification relates to individuals who work as project supervisors and designers for private clients or organisations. They require high level permaculture design skills, and knowledge in a broad range of areas in keeping with permacultures multi-disciplinary nature. They may be involved in supervising individuals and teams of people on urban and rural work sites and in community projects.

The qualification is suited to learners who wish to work at the supervisory level within permaculture design projects, and may involve the supervision of others and working with people of diverse backgrounds and abilities.

There are no Training Package entry requirements for this qualification.

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

Students must have access to land for a permaculture design. This can be undertaken in conjunction with a private landholder, community group or business.


There are no information sessions currently scheduled for this course.


This is a Flexible Full time course. You will need to attend approximately 2.5 hours per week via Adobe Connect sessions and one on one interaction with your teacher for 12 months. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 14 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 6 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours working on research and assessments.

The largest component of this course is studied remotely from the National Environment Centre, where students follow unit learning resources in a sequential yet clustered manner. Central to their progress is weekly Adobe Connect Sessions also involving all other learners at the same time, as well as individual one-to-one teacher interaction weekly and a campus site visit early in the course to understand the broader principles of design in action.

Students are researching and collecting data associated with their key design project. This activity may include visiting the site for their project, or researching local data or collating online information. Other activities include engaging with stakeholders central to their project work.


The teacher will be in contact at commencement to discuss the practical requirements of the course. Students will undertake a permaculture design on a property. eg urban property, rural property, community or school garden, etc. It requires interaction with a teacher with specific bioregional understanding (via phone and emails) to contextualise the course to make it applicable to each student?s unique situation.


This course is designed for people to wish to work in community based permaculture projects or designs, or design their own permaculture system.

If work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of your course, due to the impacts of COVID 19 there may be a delay or modification in being able to undertake these aspects of your course in the planned timeframe. Be assured, we'll keep you informed every step of the way.

This course is delivered Flexibly and Fulltime. An individual training plan will be provided when you enrol in this course. Your plan will outline the recommended study timetable and detail your units and assessments.


This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
