The nationally recognised Certificate III in Automotive Refinishing Technology gets you job-ready for specialising in refinishing, repairing and maintaining painted surfaces on a range of automotive vehicles, motorcycles, marine craft, aircraft, caravans and more.

This is a fully government-subsidised JobTrainer course. Eligibility criteria applies


Through a mix of theory and practical coursework, learn to:

  • Interpret and apply repair instructions
  • Prepare substrates, including removing paint and masking panels
  • Prepare spray painting equipment
  • Apply colour matching techniques using vehicle paint codes
  • Apply refinishing primers

TAFE NSW offers the Certificate III in Automotive Refinishing Technology as an apprenticeship. There may also be options available for you to study as a non-apprentice.


To be eligible for this course, you must:

  • Be employed as anapprentice in the automotive industry evidenced by a letter of support from your employer
  • Submit your Training Plan Proposal (TPP) with your application

To be prepared for this course, it is recommended that you have:

  • An aptitude for practical work
  • An enjoyment of working with your hands
  • An eye for colour and design
  • Good communication skills
  • A reasonable fitness level to manage manual tasks
  • Literacy and numeracy skills at a year 10 level, or equivalent
  • A keen interest in design in the automotive industry

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you are:

  • an apprentice (you will work in industry and study at the same time)
  • employed full time
  • signed up with an Apprentice Network Provider and have a Training Plan Proposal
  • seeking to gain skills and knowledge to become qualified in Automotive Refinishing Technology after successful completion

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • To attend regularly, apply yourself to compeltion of study resources and assigned tasks. Manage work evidence and employer support during your time in the workplace.

This is a block release course. You will need to attend approximately 2 days every 3 weeks, over 3 years.

You may also be required to complete approximately 11.6 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including private research, industry training and revision.

Australian Apprenticeships training can be on-the-job, off-the-job or a combination of both. TAFE NSW will negotiate your attendance and study pattern with you and your employer.

There are a range of study options for NSW Apprentices and eligible non-apprentices with relevant industry work experience in this course.

Under the NSW Government fee-free apprenticeship initiative, NSW apprentices that commence their training on or after 1 July 2018 may be eligible for fee-free training. Apprentices are required to provide evidence of their NSW apprenticeship to finalise their enrolment and applicable fees.

This course is also a TAFE NSW Trade Pathways Qualification and ideal if you have been working in this industry for an extended period of time but havent received a qualification. To be eligible to enrol as a non-apprentice and secure funding, you must firstly meet the Smart and Skilled eligibility criteria and be:

  • over 21 years of age
  • able to demonstrate and provide evidence of extensive industry experience and
  • able to demonstrate relevant ongoing work experience and provide workplace evidence to support the achievement of competence.

Before you can start an apprenticeship, you first need to find an employer in the industry you're interested in that will support you through your studies. You and your employer should contact an Apprenticeship Network Provider (ANP) and tell them you're interested in studying at TAFE NSW.

The ANP will help you and your employer to complete a Training Contract. Once you have a Training Contract, we will help you, your employer and the ANP to complete a Training Plan Proposal. Once you have both these documents, the ANP will lodge them with State Training Services, who will provide further advice about next steps.
