If you would like a career in the Work Health and Safety area, then the Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety is for you. Designed by industry professionals, this qualification will give you a broad range of practical knowledge and skills, allowing you to provide accurate, valid and timely WHS advice and assist with improving workplace safety.
The course covers a range of units of competency including:
- The implementation and maintenance of WHS consultation and participation processes
- Assisting with responding to incidents
- Contributing to WHS hazard identification
- Risk assessment and risk control
- Assisting with claims management
- Rehabilitation and return-to-work programs
- Assisting with compliance with current WHS regulations
- Writing complex documents and making presentations
Successful completion of the Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety can lead to a range of career opportunities including Work Health and Safety (WHS) Systems Officer, Work Health and Safety Coordinator and Safety Health and Wellbeing Advisor.

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification.
It is assumed that you have literacy, numeracy and technical skills at Certificate III level for success in this course. Contact your TAFE NSW campus if you have any questions about your suitability.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.
To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you have:
- experience in industry, to at least a Certificate III level or equivalent, including health and safety experience as a team member or supervisor, conducting safety observations, identifying hazards, doing risk assessments, experiencing site safety inductions, being a safety committee member, or attending toolbox group or team safety talks
- additional Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) support, may be provided in the classroom where a need has been highlighted through screening. If you have identified as having a disability, you are eligible to receive individual tutorial support, determined on an individual basis
To successfully complete this course, you will need:
- to complete your course work, as per your timetable schedule
- to participate regularly and consistently
- to have access to computer hardware and software, for practice and completion of at-home activities, and the completion of assessment work

STUDY COMMITMENT
This is a part time day course. You will need to attend approximately 7 hours of class, over 1 day a week, for 36 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 5.8 hours of other study per week.
You may also be required to complete approximately 2.5 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including private study, research, and assessment preparation.

This course is currently scheduled on Friday, from 8.30am to 4.00pm. via self-paced, self-directed learning. A teacher is available for assistance during both on and off-campus learning.
SMART AND SKILLED FEES
This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.
Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
