INDUSTRY DEMAND

The number of children using long day care has increased by 18% since 2012, and this trend will continue to 2021.

As consumer demand grows, so does the demand for teachers qualified at degree level. This Certificate III qualification is a great first step toward a long and rewarding career in the industry.

TRAINING PACKAGE REQUIREMENTS

There are no Training Package entry requirements for this course.

TAFE NSW REQUIREMENTS

To complete and be successful in this course, you will need to have:

  • A valid Working with Children Check (WWCC). Your WWCC must be provided before working with children and young people in simulated work environments or prior to work placement. Your teacher will advise you when this is necessary
  • Evidence of certain vaccinations. Some workplaces will require this evidence before you are able to start your work placement

It's also important to know that by enrolling in this course, you agree that you are physically fit and able to undertake the following tasks:

  • Manual lifting
  • Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and first aid to an expected standard. Certain aspects of assessment rely on your physical ability to: perform two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult and infant manikin at floor level and respond to an emergency situation where there may be risk to life

If you are unable to provide evidence or meet the physical requirements listed above, you will not be able to successfully complete this course.

Work Health and Safety units

Work health and safety units are contextualised to the WorkCover NSW legislation.

First Aid

The Safe Work Australia National WHS Model Code of Practice for First Aid in the Workplace.

Safe Work references the nationally endorsed first aid units of competency from the HLT Training Package. It also sets the requirements for refresher courses for first aid and CPR.

In addition, training providers implement their training programs in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines for education and training (Guideline 10). These guidelines are available online at the Australian Resuscitation Council website.

To be prepared for this course, it is recommended that you have:

  • A sound ability to read, write and speak English
  • A basic ability to apply numeracy

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • Complete a 'Working with Children Check'- Anyone engaging in child-related work (including student placements and volunteers) MUST have a current Working with Children Check (students/volunteers free).   • First Aid- complete HLTAID004 Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting which will include a mandatory eight-hour face to face session. For students who are unable to attend a TAFE NSW campus to complete the unit they will need to obtain a statement of attainment for HLTAID004 Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting with another RTO and provide evidence of this. Student?s fee will be reduced accordingly on enrolment or submission of their statement once a credit transfer has been completed. In order to complete HLTAID004, you must be able to undertake first aid responses including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for at least 2 minutes while kneeling on the floor.
  • You will need to have computer literacy skills to be able to complete this course.
  • You are required to undertake a minimum of 120 hours of work placement in an Australian regulated education and care service as part of the training package requirements for this qualification.
  • You will be provided with access to a suitable Australian regulated education and care service for work placement. This is arranged by TAFE NSW teachers or workplace managers and assessed for suitability.
  • You may already have access to a registered education and care service through paid or voluntary employment. This can be assessed for suitabi

INFORMATION SESSIONS

STUDY COMMITMENT
This is a full time course. You will need to attend approximately 14.9 hours of class, over 5 days a week, for 24 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 7.8 hours of other study per week.
You may also be required to complete approximately 7.5 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including reviewing class work, reading, study notes, personal thoughts/ reflections.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

Are interested in working with chidlren and families to provide quality education and care.
You must be able to work well with people of all ages and backgrounds. You must have good language and literacy skills as you will be required to complete observations and plan for children, implementing these plans and interacting with children.

MORE ABOUT THIS COURSE
During the week beginning 28th January 2020, you will receive an introductory email and some small preliminary tasks to undertake. Please attend a compulsory orientation session on the 29/1/2020 at 10am in room T1.F.105. Face to face classes will begin on Monday 3rd February at 9.00am. Delivery and assessment period will conclude on 19th June 2020, however there is an additional week available after this date for students who may require additional time for tutorial or assessment. Classes are held Monday to Friday 9.00am to approximately 3:00pm with the exception of playsessions where you will be required to attend from 8:45am.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process.
