INDUSTRY DEMAND

The number of children using long day care has increased by 18% since 2012, and this trend will continue to 2021.

As consumer demand grows, so does the demand for teachers qualified at degree level. This Certificate III qualification is a great first step toward a long and rewarding career in the industry.

There are no Training Package entry requirements for this course.

TAFE NSW REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for this course you must:

Work placement

Be able to undertake a compulsory work placement component of 120 hours to help you to apply your learning in a practical environment. If you chose to studying online at TAFE Digital, you need to organize your own placement, however TAFE NSW will support you through the process.

Other requirements

  • Have a current Working with Children Check. This is free for students. Apply for your check
  • Be adequately fit and flexible to carry out:
    • Tasks associated with the work including manual lifting
    • First aid responses including performing CPR while kneeling on the floor

Important to know

  • Most students who enrol in this course are over 18 years of age. However, if you are under 18 years of age, you will need signed consent from your parents or guardians for certain written course agreements
  • You may be required to provide evidence of vaccinations depending on the early childhood centre where you complete your work placement

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). Work Health and Safety units

Work health and safety units are contextualised to the WorkCover NSW legislation.

First Aid

The Safe Work Australia National WHS Model Code of Practice for First Aid in the Workplace.

Safe Work references the nationally endorsed first aid units of competency from the HLT Training Package. It also sets the requirements for refresher courses for first aid and CPR.

In addition, training providers implement their training programs in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines for education and training (Guideline 10). These guidelines are available online at the Australian Resuscitation Council website.

BE PREPARED

To be prepared for this course, it is recommended that you have:

  • A sound ability to read, write and speak English
  • A basic ability to apply numeracy

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you are:

  • If you are under 17 years of age you must have evidence of a Record of Successful Achievement (ROSA) through your school or NESA.

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • First Aid - You must be able to kneel on the floor for a minimum of three minutes to complete CPR and be physically fit to undertake tasks associated with the work placement (such as Manual lifting).* Complete a "Working with Children Check". Anyone engaging in child-related work(including student placements and volunteers) MUST have a current Working with Children Check (students and volunteers free). Work placement arrangements with the learner, school, employee and the teacher may take the form as a block work placement or via single days and a block.

STUDY COMMITMENT This is a Full Time Face to Face course. You will need to attend approximately 17 hours of class, over 5 days a week, for 24 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 14 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 6 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including research, study and readings to reinforce training.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

This course offering is designed for people who: Have a desire to work with young children and the ability to comprehend documents related to the Early Childhood Education and Care Industry. There are no formal pre-requisites for this course. You will however, need access to a computer/ the internet and have the ability to travel to Early Childhood services to attend compulsory work placements. Note: if enrolment numbers are low, this course will be delivered as a connected learning class. This involves a virtual classroom where you will be connected to a teacher and your fellow peers utilising a digital platform such as Skype for Business (or a similar digital learning platform). You will receive support in developing your skills in using this learning platform. Your teachers will attend a campus to run face to face workshops during the course duration.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
