INDUSTRY DEMAND

The number of children using long day care has increased by 18% since 2012, and this trend will continue to 2021.

As consumer demand grows, so does the demand for teachers qualified at degree level. This Certificate III qualification is a great first step toward a long and rewarding career in the industry.

When you study with TAFE NSW, we want you to succeed. Entry requirements allow us to make sure that you have the right pre-existing knowledge and skills to achieve your chosen qualification. You will need to provide evidence that you meet the requirements listed in this section.

There are no Training Package entry requirements for this course.

TAFE NSW REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for this course you must:

Work placement

Be able to undertake a compulsory work placement component of 120 hours to help you to apply your learning in a practical environment. If you chose to studying online at TAFE Digital, you need to organize your own placement, however TAFE NSW will support you through the process.

Other requirements

  • Have a current Working with Children Check. This is free for students. Apply for your check
  • Be adequately fit and flexible to carry out:
    • Tasks associated with the work including manual lifting
    • First aid responses including performing CPR while kneeling on the floor

Important to know

  • Most students who enrol in this course are over 18 years of age. However, if you are under 18 years of age, you will need signed consent from your parents or guardians for certain written course agreements
  • You may be required to provide evidence of vaccinations depending on the early childhood centre where you complete your work placement

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). Work Health and Safety units

Work health and safety units are contextualised to the WorkCover NSW legislation.

First Aid

The Safe Work Australia National WHS Model Code of Practice for First Aid in the Workplace.

Safe Work references the nationally endorsed first aid units of competency from the HLT Training Package. It also sets the requirements for refresher courses for first aid and CPR.

In addition, training providers implement their training programs in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines for education and training (Guideline 10). These guidelines are available online at the Australian Resuscitation Council website.

BE PREPARED

To be prepared for this course, it is recommended that you have:

  • A sound ability to read, write and speak English
  • A basic ability to apply numeracy

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • access to a computer and internet for some research activities and completion of assessments. You will require a reliable internet connection.
  • all students must hold a current NSW Working with Children Check (or equivalent for other states) prior to being approved for work placement.
  • you need to be reasonably, physically fit to undertake the work placement as the tasks and activities associated may involve manual lifting and other physical activities. This course includes the required First Aid unit (HLTAID004) for those working in Early Childhood. The one (1) day practical assessment session for HLTAID004 will be completed onsite at TAFE Digital, Strathfield. If you are unable to attend at Strathfield you can enrol to do the First Aid unit with another NSW TAFE college and you will need to notify us so we can arrange payment for the course. The First Aid practical assessment requires students to be physically able to perform CPR on the floor for a period of six (6) minutes, in multiple scenarios.

Work Placement is a requirement of this course. You will need to complete:

  • a minimum of 120hours work placement in an Australian regulated early education and care service.
  • if the student's work placement is in a remote location, or an area without an available assessor, the student will be required to submit Video Evidence documenting their work placement performance.
  • students will need to be physically able to lift and assist young children during physical care routines and manually handle furniture and equipment.
  • during the 120 hours work placement there are specified elements of particular units which must be assessed. Student assessment during work placement consists of direct observation and written tasks which need to be submitted for marking at the completion of each placement, (feedback is given to the student during work placement on these tasks).

INFORMATION SESSIONS

There are no information sessions currently scheduled for this course.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is an online course. You will need to complete approximately 16 hours of online study, each week, for your enrolment duration of 18 months. You can increase the hours of online study per week to complete the course sooner.

You can also expect to complete approximately 5 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including private study, assignment preparation, participation in webinars and forums, practise of skills, work experience and research.

For the First Aid Unit HLTAID004 Students will attend a 1 day practical session at 51 Wentworth Rd. Strathfield NSW from 8.30am ? 5pm. The session will involve:

  • theory revision
  • demonstration and assessment of practical skills:
  • CPR
  • operation of a defibrillator
  • asthma puffers
  • response to emergency scenarios including bandaging
  • written test

This course offering is designed for people who: Want to start a career working with young children in an Early Childhood Service. You could work with children from 0 ? 6years in a range of children?s services: providing care routines for young children; maintaining a safe and healthy environment; recording children?s development and planning experiences for them. This course in Early Childhood would be suitable as a career change or to return to work, as well as suited to new entrants to the Early Childhood profession.

There are additional learning and study tools available for this course, including:

  • documents and videos provided on the OLS for unit completion.
  • lSee sessions include hygiene for hand washing, bottle prep nappy changing, practising setting up cots, are assessed prior to Work placement through knowledge assessment and students use the early part of their Work placement to observe these tasks in action in a service.
  • each unit (and cluster of units) also have access to regular monthly webinars (live online classrooms) for teacher and peer support.
  • there are also recorded sessions for all units of competency and these are provided to students on the corresponding ?forum? pages through the ?Connect? tab on the OLS.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

This training is subsidised by the NSW government under Smart and Skilled. The student fee you will need to pay, will be determined according to your personal circumstances and eligibility for a subsidised place, you may also be eligible for a concession fee, fee exemption or fee free scholarship. Payment by instalments is available.
