##INDUSTRY DEMAND

There has been demand for teacher aides since 2011 with significant continued job growth expected through to 2023. An anticipated 85,000 jobs will open over the next 5 years. Also in high-demand are teaching assistants in mainstream schools to support students with disability and learning difficulties.

##TRAINING PACKAGE REQUIREMENTS

There are no Training Package entry requirements for this qualification.

TAFE NSW REQUIREMENTS

To complete this course, you will need to have:

  • A valid Working with Children Check (WWCC). Your WWCC must be provided before working with children and young people in simulated work environments or prior to work placement. Your teacher will advise you when this is necessary
  • Evidence of certain vaccinations. Some workplaces will require this evidence before you are able to start your work placement

It is also important to know that by enrolling in this course, you agree that you are physically fit and able to undertake the following tasks:

  • Manual lifting
  • Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and first aid to an expected standard. Certain aspects of assessment rely on your physical ability to: perform two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult and infant manikin at floor level, and respond to an emergency situation where there may be risk to life

If you are unable to provide evidence or meet the physical requirements listed above, you will not be able to successfully complete this course.

##LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

There are no licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this qualification.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

##WORK PLACEMENT

Work placement provides you with opportunities to practice responding to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a classroom or simulated environment.

This course has a mandatory 100 hours of work placement to enable you to apply your learning in a practical environment.

TAFE NSW will support you in coordinating your work placement agreement within a school (K-12) environment that caters for students with recognised additional needs.

YOUR READINESS FOR WORK PLACEMENT

Work placements generally only begin once you have had significant contact with your teacher and they are satisfied that you are ready to benefit from on-the-job learning and performing workplace duties.

##BE PREPARED

To be prepared for this course, it is recommended that you are:

  • Reasonably fit and flexible to carry out first aid responses like CPR while kneeling on the floor
  • Able to access a K-12 school that caters for students with recognised additional needs, and can undertake the 100 hours of work placement

COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you have:

  • relevant legal checks - Working With Children Check

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • computer access, internet and basic Microsoft Word proficiency
  • 120 hours of Work Placement in primary or secondary school setting in a paid or voluntary position in a Government or non-Government school.

A Working with Children Check (WWCC) is required prior to commencing work placement. Students will not be excluded from enrolment in the course if they do not have their WWWC prior to commencing, as it is the school's legal responsibility to confirm that students? have a current WWCC.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a full time flexible course. You will need to attend approximately 10 hours of class, over 2 days a week, for 36 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 1 hour of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 9 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including 100 hours Work Placement, private study, research and Moodle participation.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
