There has been demand for teacher aides since 2011 with significant continued job growth expected through to 2023. An anticipated 85,000 jobs will open over the next 5 years. ##TRAINING PACKAGE REQUIREMENTS

TAFE NSW REQUIREMENTS

To complete this course, you will need to have:

  • A valid Working with Children Check (WWCC). Your WWCC must be provided before working with children and young people in simulated work environments or prior to work placement. Your teacher will advise you when this is necessary
  • Evidence of certain vaccinations. Some workplaces will require this evidence before you are able to start your work placement

It is also important to know that by enrolling in this course, you agree that you are physically fit and able to undertake the following tasks:

  • Manual lifting
  • Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and first aid to an expected standard. Certain aspects of assessment rely on your physical ability to: perform two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult and infant manikin at floor level, and respond to an emergency situation where there may be risk to life

If you are unable to provide evidence or meet the physical requirements listed above, you will not be able to successfully complete this course.

##LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

There are no licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this qualification.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). ##WORK PLACEMENT

Work placement provides you with opportunities to practice responding to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a classroom or simulated environment.

This course has a mandatory 100 hours of work placement to enable you to apply your learning in a practical environment.

TAFE NSW will support you in coordinating your work placement agreement within a school (K-12) environment that caters for students with recognised additional needs.

YOUR READINESS FOR WORK PLACEMENT

Work placements generally only begin once you have had significant contact with your teacher and they are satisfied that you are ready to benefit from on-the-job learning and performing workplace duties.

##BE PREPARED

To be prepared for this course, it is recommended that you are:

  • Reasonably fit and flexible to carry out first aid responses like CPR while kneeling on the floor
  • Able to access a K-12 school that caters for students with recognised additional needs, and can undertake the 100 hours of work placement

Work Placement is a requirement of this course. You will need to complete:

  • a minimum of 100 hours supervised work placement within a school (K-12) environment that caters for students with recognised additional needs.

You will be required to arrange your own work placement which will be completed progressively throughout the course. You are required to complete a range of assessment tasks in the workplace. You will need to consider, in consultation with your supervisor, how many hours will be required to complete the tasks and skills required.

Student Readiness for Work Placement documents must be submitted before commencing work placement ? they include:

  • a Workplace Learning Agreement
  • WHS Risk Assessment
  • Student Code of Conduct
  • a Workplace Notification form

Student eligibility for work placement:
Before commencement of work placement students will require:

  • a completed National Police Check
  • a valid Working with Children Check for work within NSW
  • organisations that agree to offer work placement for students must also be provided with the student's WWCC.

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • to purchase the textbook Supporting Education ? 3rd Edition by Karen Kearns (ISBN: 9780170419642).
  • access to a computer and a reliable Internet connection
  • to be reasonably, physically fit to undertake the traineeship, as the tasks and activities associated may involve manual lifting and other physical activities
  • a valid Working with Children Check for work within NSW.
    The WWCC is to be verified through the Office of the Children's Guardian by TAFE NSW and stored on the student's file.

COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

To be enrolled in this course, you are required to provide evidence prior to enrolment of:

  • Hold a current Working with Children Check (WWCC) clearance in your State, or qualified for an exemption. Information on the NSW WWCC application is available on https://www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au. Students residing in other States and Territories will need to provide TAFE NSW with an equivalent probity check (for example, ACT Working with Vulnerable People Check; QLD Blue Card).
  • Anyone engaging in child-related work (including student placements and volunteers) must have a current Working with Children Check (students/volunteers can obtain a WWCC for free).

INFORMATION SESSIONS

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is an online course. You will need to complete approximately 18 hours of online study, each week, for your enrolment duration of 1 year.
You can increase the hours of online study per week to complete the course sooner.

You can also expect to complete approximately 6 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including private study, assignment preparation, work experience and research.

  • student progress is monitored and students are responded to on an individual participation basis.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

This training is subsidised by the NSW government under Smart and Skilled. The student fee you will need to pay, will be determined according to your personal circumstances and eligibility for a subsidised place. You may also be eligible for a concession fee, fee exemption, or fee free scholarship. Payment made by instalments is available.
