Course Details

The nationally accredited Certificate III in Education Support enables you to work as an in-demand learning support officer or teachers aide. Assist students with varying and additional needs so they get the most out of study and make a difference in the lives of children and young people.

COURSE SUCCESS REQUIREMENTS

During your study, you will need to meet specific requirements to complete your coursework.

You need to meet the following requirements to be able to undertake work placement. Your teacher will let you know when you need to provide evidence of:

  • A National Police Check
  • A Working with Children Check (WWCC)
  • Vaccination and health screenings
  • Any additional evidence your work placement provider requires

WORK PLACEMENT

Work placement provides you with opportunities to respond to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment.

During your course you will undertake a mandatory 100 hours of work placement with a suitable industry employer.

TAFE NSW will help you arrange your work placement in a school (K-12) environment that caters for students with recognised additional needs.
Work placement generally only begins once you have had significant contact with your teacher and they are satisfied that you are ready to benefit from on-the-job industry learning.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:

  • The ability to read, write and speak English at least a Year 10 level or equivalent
  • The ability to write at least one page of comprehensive information
  • A reasonable level of fitness to undertake manual handling tasks, and perform CPR while kneeling on the floor

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you have:

  • A valid Working with Children Check (WWCC) for work within NSW. The WWCC can be for volunteers (if you are undertaking an unpaid work placement or volunteer work) otherwise you will need to have a valid WWCC for those undertaking paid work.
  • Offering only open to students from Coffs Harbour, Macksville, Nambucca, Bellingen and Grafton and Yamba Shires.

To successfully complete this course:

  • Students are able to attend TAFE classes on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays 9.00am - 3.30pm, and Thursdays 9am 12 noon at Coffs Harbour Education Campus during term time.
  • Students are also expected to participate in 6 -12 hours per week of work placement in a school setting to meet the 100 hour work placement requirement for the qualification.
    To meet the first aid requirements included in this qualification:
  • You are required to complete 6 hours of pre-study and self- assessments online before attending the mandatory face to face delivery. Online log in details to the Moodle site containing pre-course material will be emailed upon enrolment. During the face to face delivery you will be required to complete a multiple choice assessment, an incident report, a skills assessment for CPR and a number of additional case management studies.
  • Students are also expected to complete 5 hours per week of directed self paced learning which may include research, reading and assessment preparation.
  • 100 hours work placement in a school setting for the qualification. You will need to participate in 6 -12 hours per week of work placement in a school setting. Work placement will be organised by the TAFE NSW Early Childhood, Education and Care section at Coffs Harbour Education Campus in consultation with the student and the relevant local school.

INFORMATION SESSIONS

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a full time - Connected Learning course. You will need to attend approximately 16 hours of class, over 3.5 days a week, for 39 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 4 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 5.5 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including assessment preparation, research and readings.

Face to face attendance is an incentive it is NOT a compulsory requirement. Students are expected to participate in a minimum of 5 hours per week of directed self paced learning which may include research, reading and assessment completion.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
