The nationally accredited Certificate III in Education Support enables you to work as an in-demand learning support officer or teachers aide. Assist students with varying and additional needs so they get the most out of study and make a difference in the lives of children and young people.

COURSE SUCCESS REQUIREMENTS

During your study, you will need to meet specific requirements to complete your coursework.

You need to meet the following requirements to be able to undertake work placement. Your teacher will let you know when you need to provide evidence of:

  • A National Police Check
  • A Working with Children Check (WWCC)
  • Vaccination and health screenings
  • Any additional evidence your work placement provider requires

WORK PLACEMENT

Work placement provides you with opportunities to respond to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment.

During your course you will undertake a mandatory 100 hours of work placement with a suitable industry employer.

TAFE NSW will help you arrange your work placement in a school (K-12) environment that caters for students with recognised additional needs.
Work placement generally only begins once you have had significant contact with your teacher and they are satisfied that you are ready to benefit from on-the-job industry learning.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:

  • The ability to read, write and speak English at least a Year 10 level or equivalent
  • The ability to write at least one page of comprehensive information
  • A reasonable level of fitness to undertake manual handling tasks, and perform CPR while kneeling on the floor

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • Students need to have adequate motor skills and physical fitness to undertake CPR for a minimum of 2 minutes on a mannequin and put a patient in the recovery position and for routine tasks relevant to a school setting, including lifting equipment. Working With Children Check (WWCC) are requested at induction to course. All WWCCs are verified and evidence of the WWCC number and verification are stored locally.

  • Work placement is arranged locally by the section and information on work placement arrangements are stored locally against the students record. Students are required to complete a minimum of 100 hours work- placement in a school environment.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a part-time day course. You will need to attend approximately 6 hours of class, over 1 day a week, for 38 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 13.8 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 5.7 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including research, private study, assessment preparation and work experience.

The target industry is education in public and independent schools and community settings. Specific elective units are chosen for delivery in consultation with local schools.
Workers who provide assistance and support to teachers in this industry are employed on a full or part time work or volunteer basis.
Candidates fall into several groups, they generally:

  • have been working in the industry and seek to have their workplace skills recognised and broadened.
  • have been volunteering and seek the qualification to enhance their opportunity to gain paid work.
  • are paid workers who seek to broaden their knowledge and skills in the industry.
  • are currently working in a different industry and are seeking to change vocations.
  • are parents of children with special needs who seek to learn more about the role to assist both for their own children and others
    As many candidates are workers and /or parents they require part-time study either day within school hours . They also require the opportunity to complete some of their course off-campus.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
