Assessments

Assessments give you the opportunity to demonstrate what you have learnt and to identify the knowledge or skills that may need further development.

  • Knowledge tasks: online quizzes, multiple choice questions, matching and true or false activities

  • Project tasks: case studies, creative projects, research activities, presentations

  • Workplace portfolio: reflective journals, implementing activities, practical skills demonstrations

  • Training logbook: completion of a minimum of 100 hours of work placement

Work placement

Work placement provides you with opportunities to respond to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.

  • To be enrolled in this course offering, you need to be able to meet the following work placement requirements:

    • You will be required to complete your Work Placement within Western Sydney region, in the Fairfield and Liverpool Local Government areas.
    • A minimum of 100 hours of work placement in a Primary and/ or secondary School in Australia is required for this qualification.
    • Work placement must take place in the Western Sydney region, in the local LGA’s surrounding the TAFE NSW Miller Campus.
    • The work placement will be arranged by the TAFE NSW in partnership with the school and implemented within the student’s program to enable consolidation, reflection, improvement and assessment to occur.
    • Student needs to evidence successful progression in the course to be eligible to attempt work placement.
    • A student may already have access to a School through paid or voluntary employment. This can be assessed by TAFE NSW for suitability for the student to complete their placement.
    • A valid Working with Children Check will be required by the Education and Care Service.
    • The Service and/or some locations may also have additional requirements such as vaccination and Police Checks.
    • Students will be notified of specific requirements prior to placement. Please note: There are currently COVID 19 vaccination requirements for volunteers and employees in the Education and Care Sector.

    Work placement is an opportunity to learn on the job and complete assessment requirements and often leads to employment opportunities.

Additional entry requirements

To make sure this delivery option is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

  • This full time day (9 month course) is 3 days per week programmed for 27 delivery weeks. This is generally across 3 school terms with term breaks. It would be best suited to a learner who is able to commit to 2 days per week on campus with a third day self-directed study or workshops. During work placement, students will be expected to attend across 5 days per week, at a school in the Western Sydney Region, in LGA’s surrounding Miller campus. The course is generally delivered during school hours. This delivery could be coupled with work in a classroom environment catering to primary or secondary school students or other employment or commitments. If this does not sound like you, we have other delivery options that may better suit you. Students will be required to meet minimum literacy and numeracy standards to meet the requirements of industry and this course. Students will require regular access to, and have the ability to use a computer and internet. This could either be your personal device or can be accessed at your local campus.

Units Units taught in this course

Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate III in School Based Education Support qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 15 units of competency, including 10 core and 5 speciality units.

Course delivery Combination study

Learn through a combination of classroom based, online and/or workplace activity. For example, you may participate in scheduled classroom activity, have an element of self-directed learning with online content, and/or receive supervised training while on the job, doing work experience, or on placement.

Classroom activity will be scheduled, but online learning can provide more flexibility. Teacher support will be provided for all study. Access to a computer with an internet connection is required.

TAFE NSW Miller is a quiet and relaxed campus located on Hoxton Park Road, just off the M7 in Sydney’s south west. With facilities designed to simulate real-world situations and working environments, TAFE NSW Miller provides students with the opportunity to apply their skills in a practical way. Like the Building and Construction Faculty, which features beautiful timber panelling, stained glass windows and painted ceiling rosettes that have all been skilfully restored by talented TAFE NSW students.
