Course Details

The nationally recognised Certificate III in Community Services prepares you to start your career as a community services worker. You will build a strong foundation of skills and learn about the industry, while exploring different sectors to find the right community services career for you.

INDUSTRY DEMAND

The community services and health industries are the largest and fastest growing in Australia. Job prospects in major cities and rural and regional areas are excellent. The industry is projected to grow at an average rate of 8.4% per year to 2024 making now a great time to gain your qualification and join the ranks in community services.

TAFE NSW offers the Certificate III in Community Services as either a traineeship or non-traineeship, so you can create the career you want.

Non-traineeship

There are no entry requirements for non-trainees.

Traineeship

To be eligible to undertake this course as a traineeship you must:

  • Be employed in?the community services industry, as evidenced by a letter of offer from your employer, as this course is delivered in the workplace
  • Have a signed?traineeship contract

COURSE SUCCESS REQUIREMENTS

During your study, you will need to meet specific requirements that are necessary for you to complete your course work and be successful.

You will need to meet the following success requirements to be able to undertake work experience within industry.

Your teacher will let you know when you need to provide evidence of your valid and current:

  • Working with Children Check (WWCC)
  • Criminal History Check

WORK EXPERIENCE

Work experience provides you with exposure to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment and strengthens your training at TAFE NSW.

There is no mandatory work placement for this qualification. However, this is a practical qualification. We strongly recommend you undertake 60 hours of work experience throughout the course, with a suitable industry employer to strengthen your classroom learning.

You will be required to secure your own work experience however, your TAFE NSW teacher can provide information on an appropriate industry workplace and support you in your efforts.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to complete:

  • A language, literacy and numeracy test during the orientation session.
    -Before commencing placement students have to complete a National Police Check and may be required to have a valid Working with Children Check (WWCC).

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • Study skills, including research skills, time manangement, and working on individual/group projects.
  • Students are required to obtain a Working With Children Check and a National Criminal Record Check prior to starting work placement.
  • You will need pens, paper and access to a device such as a laptop or tablet. Devices are available for loan at TAFE NSW librarires.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a full time, Blended course. You will need to attend approximately 19 hours of class, over 3 days a week, for 18 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 9 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 13 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including independent study, research, readings, online platforms, practice and assignments.

If you would like a career in the Community Services Industry, this qualification will assist you to gain some foundational knowledge in the sector and prepare you for a higher level qualification. The Certificate III in Community Services is a foundational level qualification which introduces students to various sectors within Community Services.

To keep you safe while studying, some of our face to face classes may be replaced with online or connected learning. We have also modified our face to face classes to meet physical distancing requirements and increased cleaning on campus. As restrictions ease, the way you attend your class may change again. If work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of your course, due to the impacts of COVID 19 there may be a delay or modification in being able to undertake these aspects of your course in the planned timeframe. Be assured, we'll keep you informed every step of the way.

This course is currently scheduled on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday . This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
