Course Details

This qualification reflects the role of workers in the community and/or residential setting who follow an individualised plan to provide person-centred support to people who may require support due to ageing, disability or some other reason. Work involves using discretion and judgement in relation to individual support as well as taking responsibility for own outputs. Workers have a range of factual, technical and procedural knowledge, as well as some theoretical knowledge of the concepts and practices required to provide person-centred support.

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 120 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of the units of competency.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

ENROLLING IN FIRST AID UNITS OF COMPETENCY
If you are seeking to enrol in a First Aid unit of competency you are advised that to complete the unit you must be able to perform basic life support skills, for example control bleeding and perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). If you have a disability that would prevent you from performing required basic life support skills you are advised that you will not be able to achieve the unit of competency.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience your fee may decrease from the maximum shown.
Payment by instalment may also be available. Your fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process.

This training is subsidised by the NSW Government, and as a result your fee is determined through Training Services NSW formal eligibility criteria. This criteria will determine your exact fee. Students who meet additional specified criteria, may be eligible for a concession fee or a fee exemption. In claiming the concession or exemption students will be required to supply the required evidence to support the claim in accord with the requirements of Smart and Skilled eligibility.

Further costs in addition to your student fees may be applicable for this qualification. These costs are to provide you with additional resources and/or Incidentals to support your learning. The following Incidentals are available for purchase online and you can source these items yourself:

-Textbook: Individual Support in Australia text and study guide (approximately $100.00)
-Workplace clothing (approximately $60.00)
Students will need to complete First Aid Training and may be require to use a first aid bandage which can be purchased from TAFE NSW for $10.00. Students are able to source their own first aid bandage if preferred.

Payment Plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

To activate your eligibility you must pay the student fee component PRIOR to commencement of the learning activity.

WORK PLACEMENTS

Many TAFE courses have a compulsory work placement component to assist you to apply your learning in a practical environment and you may be required to comply with some (or all) of the following.

1. NSW HEALTH

Before you commence any clinical placements in NSW Health facilities, you will be required to
• Meet NSW Health’s - Criminal Record Check requirements;
• Sign the NSW Health Code of Conduct form and any other forms, as required by NSW Health;
• Undertake Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Infectious Diseases and provide your Health Care Worker/Student Vaccination Record Card.

2. AGED CARE WORK - Before you undertake any clinical placements in Aged Care Facilities you will be required to undertake a Federal Criminal Record Check. Visit:

3. COMMUNITY AND CHILDREN’S SERVICES

4. STUDENT READINESS FOR WORK PLACEMENT

Generally work placements will only occur after there has been a reasonable amount of student/teacher contact and when the teacher is satisfied that you are ready to benefit from workplace learning and perform workplace duties. Your teacher can provide further information.

INFORMATION SESSION will be held on Tuesday 25 June from 2.00pm to 6.00pm at TAFE NSW Moss Vale in Block E, Room E.1.22

This course is suitable for people who want to be front-line support workers with older people, in a residential care or in community based care. You will undertake an average of 21 hours in class each week and a total of 120 hours work placement. Your placement will be spread across each semester, depending on opportunities in aged care facilities and community services.

You will be responsible for travel costs to complete on the job learning activities and field trips, and for having the appropriate clothing for workplacement. You may be required to get vaccinations.

All students are required to wear the following uniform to all face to face classes and on work placement:
- Navy dress pants
- White polo shirt
- Enclosed navy or black leather shoes
- Fob watch

You will need access to the Internet (you can use the TAFE NSW library). Learning materials will be accessed online. Students will be required to use a computer with internet access and be computer literate. Adobe sessions can be accessed from the local TAFE NSW Campus or from your home or mobile device if suitable.

ENROLLING IN FIRST AID UNITS OF COMPETENCY
During the practical CPR assessment you will be required to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR both on an infant and adult mannequin placed on the floor. This is the training package requirement and you should consider your ability to perform this assessment task before enrolling.
Classes will run Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9.00am to 3.30pm at TAFE NSW Moss Vale. Your 120 hours of work placement will be scheduled on Fridays, depending on opportunities in aged care facilities and community services.
