The nationally accredited Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) will give you the skills to work as an aged care worker in the expanding aged care industry. INDUSTRY DEMAND

The NSW Skills List identifies that there is a skills shortage for aged care workers across NSW. With an ageing population, roles for aged and disabled carers are projected to increase by over 69,000 between now and 2023.

TRAINING PACKAGE REQUIREMENTS

There are no Training Package entry requirements for this qualification.

TAFE NSW REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for this course, you:

  • Must complete a National Police Check
  • May need a Working with Children Check depending on your work placement requirements
  • Must be able to complete 120 hours of work placement

WORK PLACEMENT

Work placement provides you with the opportunity to practise responding to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a classroom.

To achieve this qualification, you will be required to undertake 120 hours of work placement.

If you choose to study on campus or through blended delivery, TAFE NSW will organise supervised work placement in a residential aged care environment.

Important information

Different types of checks are required for different organisations. Once your work placement organisation is identified you will be informed of the requirements, which may include:

  • Occupational assessment, screening and vaccination against infectious diseases.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this qualification.

BE PREPARED

To be prepared for this course, it is recommended that you:

  • Enjoy working with people
  • Have good communication skills
  • Have the ability to multi-task
  • Are a collaborative team player

You must also have a reasonable level of fitness and flexibility to carry out:

  • Manual handling tasks
  • First aid responses including performing CPR while kneeling on the floor.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

WORK PLACEMENTS

Many TAFE courses have a compulsory work placement component to assist you to apply your learning in a practical environment and you may be required to comply with some (or all) of the following.

  1. NSW HEALTH

Before you commence any clinical placements in NSW Health facilities, you will be required to
Meet NSW Healths - Criminal Record Check requirements;
Sign the NSW Health Code of Conduct form and any other forms, as required by NSW Health;
Undertake Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Infectious Diseases and provide your Health Care Worker/Student Vaccination Record Card.

  1. AGED CARE WORK - Before you undertake any clinical placements in Aged Care Facilities you will be required to undertake a Federal Criminal Record Check. Visit:

  2. COMMUNITY AND CHILDRENS SERVICES

Anyone in child-related work (including student placements and volunteers) MUST have a current Working with Children Check (students/volunteers free) in line with the Office of Childrens Guardian phase-in schedule and processes. Visit:

  1. STUDENT READINESS FOR WORK PLACEMENT

Generally work placements will only occur after there has been a reasonable amount of student/teacher contact and when the teacher is satisfied that you are ready to benefit from workplace learning and perform workplace duties. Your teacher can provide further information.

There are no TAFE NSW entry requirements nor training package requirements for this qualification. However, in order to complete the requirements of the qualification the students must complete work placement and the requirements of the local aged care providers are listed below.

Local Aged Care providers require students complete their annual influenza vaccination before they attend work placement.

Students require a current National Police Check, completed at the beginning of enrolment. If this is not clear of conviction, there may not be the opportunity for the required work placement. Some providers will review on a case by case basis but TAFE NSW is not able to guarantee workplace experience will be possible for potential students with a positive result on the National Police Check.

To successfully complete this qualification, you must have completed at least 120 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of the units of competency and other self-directed learning tasks outside the weekly class hours.

Undertaking 120 hours of supervised workplace experience in either a residential or home and community aged care environment.120hours of work placement (organised by TAFE NSW) will be completed outside of these attendance dates and times.

Work placement is organised by TAFE NSW. Learners are required to obtain a Criminal Record Check prior to commencing work placement at your own cost. If you have to complete First Aid and the First Aid course is held outside of your class time, you will still be required to attend all weekly classes.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a blended part time course. You will need to attend approximately 14.8 hours of class, over 1 day a week, for 1 year. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 10.4 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 8.1 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including private study, assignment preparation, work experience and research.

This course is currently scheduled at TAFE NSW Grenfell, Connected Learning Centre on Wednesday from 9.00am to 12.30pm. There are also 10 x 8 hour workshops to attend. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

National Police Check - This is an industry requirement and therefore you need to apply and pay for this document, further information will be provided at the first day of class.

Textbook - Recommended- The current textbook is "Individual Support in Australia- Ageing/Disability/Home and Community Care" TAFE NSW. Limited copies are available from the TAFE library.

A Navy Polo shirt to be supplied by students - it is an industry expectation that students are identifiable when in the workplace, you will be required to wear your TAFE ID at all times. Your TAFE ID badge will be available from your local TAFE front office once your enrolment is completed.
