Course Details

The nationally accredited Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) will give you the skills to work as an aged care worker in the expanding aged care industry. INDUSTRY DEMAND

The NSW Skills List identifies that there is a skills shortage for aged care workers across NSW. With an ageing population, roles for aged and disabled carers are projected to increase by over 69,000 between now and 2023.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

TAFE NSW offers the Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) as either a traineeship or non-traineeship, so you can shape the career you want.

Non-traineeship

There are no entry requirements for non-trainees. You can enrol in this course now.

Traineeship

To be eligible for this course you must:

  • Be employed in the aged care industry as this course is delivered in the workplace
  • Have a signed traineeship contract

COURSE SUCCESS REQUIREMENTS

During your study, you will need to meet specific requirements that are necessary for you to complete your course work and be successful.

You will need to meet the following success requirements to be able to undertake work placement within industry. Your teacher will let you know when you need to provide evidence of:

  • Australian National Police Record Check
  • Occupational assessment, screening and vaccination against infectious diseases
  • Health care worker/student vaccination record card
  • Working with Children Check (WWCC) depending on your work placement
  • Signed code of conduct form and any other forms
  • Any additional evidence your work placement provider requires

WORK PLACEMENT

Work placement provides you with opportunities to practise responding to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment.?Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.

During your course you will undertake a mandatory 120 hours of work placement with a suitable industry employer.

Depending on your mode of study, TAFE NSW will either arrange your work placement for you or support you to find one.

You must also have a reasonable level of fitness and flexibility to carry out:

  • Manual handling tasks
  • First aid responses including performing CPR while kneeling on the floor

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence of:

  • A National Criminal Record Check without convictions
  • Basic level of literacy, English language skills and entry level employability and life skills which will enable them to provide support to clients.
  • Basic computer skills. Course work and assessments will be accessed through an online learning platform.

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • Physical ability to complete tasks required of a direct care worker.
  • To complete a total of 120 hours work placement in Residential Aged Care arranged by TAFE NSW work place coordinator. You must be able to complete workplacement shifts from 6.00am onwards.

Some workplaces require students to complete a health check, immunisation &/or Working with children check.

This is a Full Time course. You will need to attend approximately 18 hours of class, over 3 days a week, for30 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 12 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 10 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including self study revision and reading library/learning hub.

This course offering is designed for people who:

  • Are interested in gaining employment as a direct care worker in a Residential Aged Care or community services setting.

There are additional learning and study tools available for this course, including:

  • Support from Course Coordinator and TAFE NSW Workplace Supervisor / Assessor.
  • Educational Support Officer on Mondays, 9.00am to 3.00pm at Gosford Campus or via phone, Skype and email.
  • Work placement coordinator to organise suitable work placement opportunities.

As a TAFE NSW student in this course, you will have access to:

Learners will attend classes for 25 weeks and complete work placement for the remaining 5 weeks of delivery. Work placement is delivered in blocks on pre-determined weeks throughout the course.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
