The nationally accredited Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) will give you the skills to work as an aged care worker in the expanding aged care industry. INDUSTRY DEMAND

The NSW Skills List identifies that there is a skills shortage for aged care workers across NSW. With an ageing population, roles for aged and disabled carers are projected to increase by over 69,000 between now and 2023.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

TAFE NSW offers the Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) as either a traineeship or non-traineeship, so you can shape the career you want.

Non-traineeship

There are no entry requirements for non-trainees. You can enrol in this course now.

Traineeship

To be eligible for this course you must:

  • Be employed in the aged care industry as this course is delivered in the workplace
  • Have a signed traineeship contract

COURSE SUCCESS REQUIREMENTS

During your study, you will need to meet specific requirements that are necessary for you to complete your course work and be successful.

You will need to meet the following success requirements to be able to undertake work placement within industry. Your teacher will let you know when you need to provide evidence of:

  • Australian National Police Record Check
  • Occupational assessment, screening and vaccination against infectious diseases
  • Health care worker/student vaccination record card
  • Working with Children Check (WWCC) depending on your work placement
  • Signed code of conduct form and any other forms
  • Any additional evidence your work placement provider requires

WORK PLACEMENT

Work placement provides you with opportunities to practise responding to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment.?Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.

During your course you will undertake a mandatory 120 hours of work placement with a suitable industry employer.

Depending on your mode of study, TAFE NSW will either arrange your work placement for you or support you to find one.

You must also have a reasonable level of fitness and flexibility to carry out:

  • First aid responses including performing CPR while kneeling on the floor

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

Before commencement of work placement, students may be required to:

  • Satisfactorily complete a national criminal record check (mandatory). NOTE: Having a criminal record may prevent you from undertaking work placement, and therefore prevent your successful completion of the course. It is also likely to prevent you from obtaining work in the industry.
  • Undertake occupational assessment to ensure suitability for physical tasks
  • Some facilities require students to have a Working with Children Check.

Teachers will organise student work placement (120hrs) and match students to relevant facilities with which TAFE NSW has a student placement agreement.
You will be responsible for travel costs to complete on the job learning activities and field trips and for having the appropriate clothing for work placement (white polo shirt, black/navy pants and black/navy enclosed shoes with non-slip soles).

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a Full Time face to face course. You will need to attend approximately 17 hours of class, over 3 days a week, for 24 weeks.. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 19 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 15 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including Self-study, revision, reading, library/learning hub.

This course offering is aimed at new entrants to the aged care industry.

SERVICES AND STUDY SUPPORT

Students will be provided with access to the following supports:

  • Counsellors, LNN specialists, interpreter services, helpdesk and online learning support.
  • Time with the teacher outside of the classroom/online lecture environment (e.g. sitting with a teacher in the library for support).
  • Guidance from library staff.
  • Guidance from student support services.
  • Opportunities to participate in tutoring.
  • Contact with teachers via email, Skype calls, phone calls, and allocated meeting times.

Work placement support, including helping the student identify and secure a work placement, supportive conversations with a teacher or Education Support officer ESO, debriefing/ mentoring by an ESO.

To keep you safe while studying, some of our face to face classes may be replaced with online or connected learning. We have also modified our face to face classes to meet physical distancing requirements and increased cleaning on campus. As restrictions ease, the way you attend your class may change again. If work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of your course, due to the impacts of COVID 19 there may be a delay or modification in being able to undertake these aspects of your course in the planned timeframe. Be assured, we'll keep you informed every step of the way.

This course is currently scheduled on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 9.00am to 3.30pm with 120hrs of work placement to take place during three one-week blocks spread over the duration of the course.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

Further costs in addition to your student fees may be applicable for this qualification. These costs are to provide you with additional resources and/or Incidentals to support your learning
The following Incidentals are available for purchase online and you can source these items yourself:

  • Textbook: Individual Support in Australia text and study guide - $100
  • Workplace clothing - approx $60.00

Students will need to complete First Aid Training requiring and may be require to use a first aid bandage which can be purchased from TAFE NSW for $10.00. Students are able to source their own first aid bandage if preferred.
