Course Details

This qualification reflects the role of workers in the community and/or residential setting who follow an individualised plan to provide person-centred support to people who may require support due to ageing, disability or some other reason. Work involves using discretion and judgement in relation to individual support as well as taking responsibility for own outputs. Workers have a range of factual, technical and procedural knowledge, as well as some theoretical knowledge of the concepts and practices required to provide person-centred support.

Two specialisations are completed for the award of this qualification - Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing, Home and Community).

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 120 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of the units of competency.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

ENROLLING IN FIRST AID UNITS OF COMPETENCY If you are seeking to enrol in a First Aid unit of competency you are advised that to complete the unit you must be able to perform basic life support skills, for example control bleeding and perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). If you have a disability that would prevent you from performing required basic life support skills you are advised that you will not be able to achieve the unit of competency.

Before you commence any clinical placements in NSW Health facilities, you will be required to
Meet NSW Healths - Criminal Record Check requirements;
Sign the NSW Health Code of Conduct form and any other forms, as required by NSW Health;
Undertake Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Infectious Diseases and provide your Health Care Worker/Student Vaccination Record Card.

2. AGED CARE WORK - Before you undertake any clinical placements in Aged Care Facilities you will be required to undertake a Federal Criminal Record Check. Visit:


Anyone in child-related work (including student placements and volunteers) MUST have a current Working with Children Check (students/volunteers free) in line with the Office of Childrens Guardian phase-in schedule and processes. Visit:


Generally work placements will only occur after there has been a reasonable amount of student/teacher contact and when the teacher is satisfied that you are ready to benefit from workplace learning and perform workplace duties. Your teacher can provide further information.


To successfully complete this course, you will need to complete all assessment tasks which demonstrate your knowledge and skills and complete 120 hours of work placement. These hours will be completed according to the shift times of the organisation. This may mean working morning shifts commencing from 6 am and afternoon shifts until 10.00pm.

Undertaking 120 hours of supervised workplace experience in either a residential or home and community aged care environment.
Teachers will organise student work placement and match students to relevant facilities with which TAFE NSW has a student placement agreement. If a student already has access through paid or voluntary work with a facility or community agency this can be assessed for suitability for the student to complete their placement with that facility as per TAFE NSW Safe and Ethical Practice during Student Workplace Learning Policy and other related policies and procedures.

Depending on the type of organisation the students undertake work placement, some or all of the following advice will apply:
Before commencement of work placement, students will be required to: - Satisfactorily complete a national criminal record check - Undertake occupational assessment, screening and vaccination against infectious diseases and provide a health care worker/student vaccination record card if completing a placement in a NSW Health run aged care facility e.g. a MPS - Some facilities require students to have a Working with Children Check

This is a blended full time course. You will need to attend approximately 18.9 hours of class, over 4 days a week, for 21 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 24 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 14.2 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including self-study revision and reading library/learning hub.


This course offering is designed for people who are looking for employment in the aged care sector. You will enjoy this course if you enjoy the company of older people and have a wish to provide a high quality of care to the older members of our community. This is a rewarding work role in an expanding workplace with many opportunities for employment. The tasks within the work role can be challenging and will require good communication skills, an ability to work on your feet for 6-8 hours shifts, being able to assist with the personal care needs of other people and enjoy working as part of a team.

This course is currently scheduled on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday from 8.45am to 3.30pm, and Thursday from 9.00am to 12.00pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.


This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

Additional costs include the cost of a National Police Check. This may be obtained following enrolment as a TAFE student for a cost of $16.00

The recommended textbook is Individual support in Australia Ageing Disability Home and community care, TAFE NSW (2016). Some copies are available from the library however if you wish to have your own personal copy for notetaking and highlighting, it will cost $90.00

The workplaces which provide work placement opportunities expect that students are recognisable as TAFE students, therefore you will need a polo shirt with the TAFE logo. These are available to order at a cost of $35.00 Please note you must have the correct polo shirt and logo to wear for work placement.
