COURSE SUCCESS REQUIREMENTS

During your study, you will need to meet specific requirements to complete your coursework.

You need to meet the following requirements to be able to undertake work placement. Your teacher will let you know when you need to provide evidence of:

  • A National Police Check
  • A Working with Children Check (WWCC)
  • Vaccination and health screenings
  • Any additional evidence your work placement provider requires

During your induction, you will undertake a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Indicator Tool to identify your general strengths and any skills gaps.

WORK PLACEMENT

Work placement provides you with opportunities to respond to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment.

During your course you will undertake a mandatory 100 hours of work placement with a suitable industry employer.

TAFE NSW will help you arrange your work placement in a school (K-12) environment that caters for students with recognised additional needs.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:

  • The ability to read, write and speak English at least a Year 10 level or equivalent
  • The ability to write at least one page of comprehensive information
  • A reasonable level of fitness to undertake manual handling tasks, and perform CPR while kneeling on the floor

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To successfully complete this course, you will need to be able to provide evidence that you are required to hold a Working with Children's Check number and organise your work placement. Your teacher will contact you to ensure your suitability for this qualification prior to your first class.

You are required to your secure your own work placement in either a Primary or Secondary school, prior to your first class. There is 100hrs of mandatory work placement required, which can be completed in a voluntary or paid capacity spread out across the duration of your 12 month course.

To successfully complete this course, TAFE NSW conditions of entry to this course include access to a computer and Internet, and the ability to work independently.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a part time day face to face course you will need to attend approximately 12.8 hours of class, over 1 day a week, for 1 year. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 7 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete additional 4.3 hours study each week outside of class hours, including prescribed readings, research and follow up activities, assessment preparation, self-directed learning and private study, work placement extra curricula activities, school programs, induction and professional development meetings.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

This course offering is designed for people who want to work in a range of education settings, including public and independent schools and community education settings, who provide assistance and support to teachers and students under broad-based supervision.

Cohorts can include existing workers, new to industry, and trainees. There are no licensing, legislative or certification requirements that apply to this qualification, however learners will need to be able to obtain a Working with Children Check to be able to undertake the work placement component of the course.
Students will need Language, Literacy and Numeracy Skills at a level that allows them to be able to access to a computer and the internet and complete course work.
Industry strongly supports the use of work placements in the Community Services sector for a number of reasons:
-To strengthen the individuals experience of the workplace to support future expectations of performance in the workforce
-To develop practice skills and application of knowledge within the workplace promotes stronger embedding of learning
-To provide exposure to real workplace situations and circumstances which cannot be replicated in a learning environment or simulation

If work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of your course, there may be a modification or delay in the planned timeframe due to COVID-19 impacts. Be assured, we'll keep you informed every step of the way.

This course is currently scheduled on 3 hour workshop through Microsoft Teams Monday from 9.00am to 12.00pm and Wednesday from 9.00am to 3.30pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
