Course Details

This qualification reflects the role of workers who develop and facilitate programs for young people through a range of community-based programs designed to address the social, behavioural, health, welfare, developmental and protection needs of young people.

This work may be undertaken through employment in community, government and youth sector agencies and workers will be:

  • responsible for implementing policies and guidelines of the employing organisation
  • largely self-directed with fairly autonomous decision-making capacity under the indirect supervision of a manager.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

ENROLLING IN FIRST AID UNITS OF COMPETENCY
If you are seeking to enrol in a First Aid unit of competency you are advised that to complete the unit you must be able to perform basic life support skills, for example control bleeding and perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). If you have a disability that would prevent you from performing required basic life support skills you are advised that you will not be able to achieve the unit of competency.

WORK PLACEMENTS

Many TAFE courses have a compulsory work placement component to assist you to apply your learning in a practical environment and you may be required to comply with some (or all) of the following.

Before you commence any clinical placements in NSW Health facilities, you will be required to
Meet NSW Healths - Criminal Record Check requirements;
Sign the NSW Health Code of Conduct form and any other forms, as required by NSW Health;
Undertake Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Infectious Diseases and provide your Health Care Worker/Student Vaccination Record Card.

  1. AGED CARE WORK - Before you undertake any clinical placements in Aged Care Facilities you will be required to undertake a Federal Criminal Record Check. Visit:

  2. COMMUNITY AND CHILDRENS SERVICES

  1. STUDENT READINESS FOR WORK PLACEMENT

Generally work placements will only occur after there has been a reasonable amount of student/teacher contact and when the teacher is satisfied that you are ready to benefit from workplace learning and perform workplace duties. Your teacher can provide further information.

There are no formal entry requirements. Students wanting to undertake the Certificate IV in Community Services complete a LLN screen during the Orientation Session, prior to course commencement, to ensure appropriate level of training and appropriate support can be provided throughout the course. Students are required to obtain a Working With Children check and a National Criminal Record check prior to commencing work placement.

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • To attend and participate in learning activities both on campus and in work placement and successfully complete assessment tasks.
  • Students will participate in 160 hours of work placement in a community services workplace as part of this course. Some assessments are completed with in your workplace. Before commencing placement students have to complete a National Police Check and a valid Working with Children Check(WWCC).

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a Full Time Blended delivery course. You will need to attend approximately 15 hours of class, over 3 days a week, for 1 year. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 10 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 15 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including research tasks with private study linked to a number of assignments. Some group work will be required with students on group work tasks and assignments.


IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

This course is designed for people who would like to work in the community services industry. The majority of prospective students are not yet employed in the Community Services Industry or are recently employed and need to gain a qualification to retain their position. Students tend to be mature aged with life experience. They are often volunteering in community service organisations. Many students are returning to study after having not studyed for a long period of time. Some students are school leavers with limited experience.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
