INDUSTRY DEMAND
The demand for personal care workers is growing.
Aged and disabled care jobs are projected to increase by 69,200 places, while nursing support and personal care worker jobs are projected to increase by over 11,400 over the five years to 2023.
It is expected that this sector will be launched into rapid change and growth based on the findings and recommendations of the recent Royal Commission into Aged Care.

TRAINING PACKAGE REQUIREMENTS
There are no Training Package entry requirements for this qualification.
TAFE NSW REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible for this course, you:
- Must complete a National Police Check
- May need a Working with Children Check - depending on your work placement requirements
- Need to be adequately fit and flexible to be able to perform CPR on the floor
WORK PLACEMENT
Work placement is a key component of this course and provides you with an opportunity to refine your practical skills in a genuine workplace.
Work placements only begin after you have completed theoretical and practical classroom work with your teacher and they are satisfied that you are ready to benefit from workplace learning and perform workplace duties.
You will attend a one-day workplace orientation plus complete one of following levels of mandatory work placement hours:
- 120 hours (15 days) of work placement - if you are already working in the industry
- 240 hours (30 days) of work placement - if you are new to the industry
You can carry out your work placement in a number of organisations. TAFE NSW will organise your placement if you are studying on campus or through blended delivery. If you choose to study with TAFE Digital online, you will need to arrange your own work placement with support from your teachers.ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). NSW HEALTH
Before you begin a clinical work placement with NSW Health, you will be required to:
- Meet NSW Healths Criminal Record Check requirements
- Sign the NSW Health Code of Conduct form and any other forms, as required by NSW Health
- Undertake Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Infectious Diseases and provide your Health Care Worker/Student Vaccination Record Card

AGED CARE WORK
Before you undertake any clinical placements in Aged Care residences you will need to undertake a Federal Criminal Record Check.
COMMUNITY SERVICES
Anyone working in the proximity of children, including student placements and volunteers, must have a current Working with Children Check.
BE PREPARED
To be prepared for this course, it is recommended that you:
- Are reasonably fit and flexible to carry out:
- tasks associated with manual handling
- first aid responses including performing CPR while kneeling on the floor
- Enjoy working with people
- Are able to work independently
- Relate to people patiently
- Have great organisation and time management skills
There are no specific entry requirements for this course but there is a screening literacy and numeracy assessment. All students will be required to complete an online enrolment. Each student will be required to complete 120 hours of practical experience in an accredited Ageing/Disability service.

To successfully complete this course:
Each student will be required to complete a minimum of 120 hours of practical experience in an accredited residential aged care facility.
You will be required to attain a level of literacy level 3. You must complete each of the units and the workplace component to a satisfactory level. - A Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) level at ACSF Level 3 when commencing the course and basic computer skills. This will be assessed as part of your enrolment process.

STUDY COMMITMENT
This is a full time blended course. You will need to attend approximately 7 hours of class, over 2 days a week, for 21 weeks.
You may also be required to complete approximately 7 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including Private study, Moodle, textbook, online videos, assignment preparation.

This qualification reflects the role of support workers who complete specialised tasks and functions in aged services; either in residential, home or community based environments. Workers will take responsibility for their own outputs within defined organisation guidelines and maintain quality service delivery through the development, facilitation and review of individualised service planning and delivery.
Workers may be required to demonstrate leadership and have limited responsibility for the organisation and the quantity and quality of outputs of others within limited parameters.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES
This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.
Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
