INDUSTRY DEMAND

The demand for personal care workers is growing.

Aged and disabled care jobs are projected to increase by 69,200 places, while nursing support and personal care worker jobs are projected to increase by over 11,400 over the five years to 2023.

It is expected that this sector will be launched into rapid change and growth based on the findings and recommendations of the recent Royal Commission into Aged Care.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

TAFE NSW offers the Certificate IV in Ageing Support as either a traineeship or non-traineeship, so you can create the career you want.

Non-traineeship

There are no entry requirements for non-trainees. You can enrol in this course now.

Traineeship

To be eligible for this course you must:

  • Be employed in the aged care industry as this course is delivered in the workplace
  • Have a signed traineeship contract

COURSE SUCCESS REQUIREMENTS

During your study, you will need to meet specific requirements that are necessary for you to complete your course work and be successful.

You will need to meet the following success requirements to be able to undertake work placement within industry. Your teacher will let you know when you need to provide evidence of:

  • Australian National Police Record Check
  • Working with Children Check (WWCC) depending on your work placement
  • Any additional evidence your work placement provider requires

WORK PLACEMENT

Work placement provides you with opportunities to practice responding to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment.

During your course you will attend a one-day workplace orientation, and complete one of the following levels of mandatory work placement hours:

  • 120 hours (15 days) of work placement - if you are already working in the industry
  • 240 hours (30 days) of work placement - if you are new to the industry

Depending on your mode of study, TAFE NSW will either arrange your work placement for you or support you to find one.

You must also have a reasonable level of fitness and flexibility to carry out:

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

THIS COURSE IS OPEN ONLY TO STUDENTS CURRENTLY EMPLOYED IN THE AGED CARE INDUSTRY Please provide evidence of employment on your first day of class.

A learner needs a competent level of reading and writing skills (ACSF Level 3) and a level of skills that will enable them to safely care for people in a busy environment. Learners must have a Criminal Record Check that will allow them to complete work placement with local industry partners, and have physical ability to safely care for others. Students are expected to be able to work independently and have basic knowledge and skills in the health and informal caring areas. This can include any previous or ongoing experience that will have contributed to their awareness of and development in the community services industry.

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • To be digitally literate, and comfortable with technology. Access to a computer with internet is essential.
  • To be responsible for travel costs to complete mandatory monthly workshops held ONLY at Wagga, Albury, Finley & Griffith; travel costs to work placement and to have the appropriate clothing for work placement (white polo shirt, black/navy pants and black/navy enclosed shoes with non-slip soles).

You will also be required to get (if you don't already hold one):

  • National Police Check (approximately $55 - current price available on Australian Federal Police website) prior to the first day of class
  • Working With Children Check ($80)

120 hrs of timetabled workplace experience is a requirement of this coure. Teachers will organise student work placement, and match student to relevant agencies.

If a student already has access through paid or voluntary work within an aged care facility this can be assessed for suitability for the student to complete one block of their placement with that agency as per TAFE NSW policies and procedures.

INFORMATION SESSIONS

There are no information sessions currently scheduled for this course.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a part-time blended course. You will need to attend approximately 9 hours of class, over 1 day a week, for 36 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 10 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 5 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including assignment preparation, homework and research.

This delivery is specifically designed for people who have successfully completed the Certificate III in Individual Support ? Ageing CHC33015. These Certificate III units will provide a credit transfer, enabling the participant to study the additional Certificate IV units to achieve the full Certificate IV qualification.

This course is offered by Connected Classroom.? This is just like a regular classroom, but teachers and students use the latest video conferencing technologies.

Your teacher can be in one TAFE location, and you can join the class from another TAFE location using video conferencing equipment or a mobile device. You can also join in from a venue in a participating regional community. You will be able to see and talk to your teacher and other students as though they were in the room with you. You will also have access to support to meet your learning needs.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

This course offering is designed for people who are currently employed and caring for older people in the aged care industry. The CONNECTED CLASSROOM method of delivery involves a weekly interactive class via live "Video Conference", with all the weekly coursework completed online. This allows a level of flexibility for students to approach their coursework independently, and on their own schedule each week. The mandatory practical workshops bring the theory to life each month at 4 selected campuses (Wagga Wagga, Albury, Finley and Griffith - travel at own expense) with practical teaching labs, offering qualified educators to teach and assess all the practical skills required to prepare you for work placements and a career in the aged care industry.

To keep you safe while studying, some of our face to face classes may be replaced with online or connected learning. We have also modified our face to face classes to meet physical distancing requirements and increased cleaning on campus. As restrictions ease, the way you attend your class may change again. If work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of your course, due to the impacts of COVID 19 there may be a delay or modification in being able to undertake these aspects of your course in the planned timeframe. Be assured, we'll keep you informed every step of the way.

Via Video Conference every Monday from 10am - 3pm, with mandatory monthly workshops held on a Friday from 9am - 4.15pm. Travel may be required at your own expense, as workshops will only be held at Wagga Wagga, Albury, Finley and Griffith.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
