Assessments

Work placement

Work placement provides you with opportunities to respond to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.

  • During your course you will undertake a mandatory 80 hours of work placement with a suitable industry employer.

  • Depending on your mode of study, TAFE NSW will arrange your work placement for you or support you to find one.

To make sure this delivery option is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

  • To successfully complete this course, you will:

    • Be required to undertake 80 work placement hours. Students must therefore be either: Employed in a relevant position in community services or undertake a work placement - teachers can determine who, how, when and where within either their own networks or support the student to gain a placement themselves at the local level. Eligibility for work placement: Before commencement of professional experience, students will require: A completed National Police Check; a valid Working with Children Check for work within NSW. The WWCC can be for volunteers (if the student is undertaking an unpaid work placement or volunteer work) otherwise they will need to have a valid WWCC for those undertaking paid work. Prior to students undertaking any work placements or vounteer work that has been organised as part of the requirements of the Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work, the WWCC is to be verified through the Office of the Children's Guardian by TAFE NSW and stored on the student's file. Organisations that agree to offer work placements for students must also be provided with the student's WWCC and reminded of their obligation to check the validity of the provided WWCC.

Units Units taught in this course

Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 15 units of competency, including 8 core and 7 speciality units.

Core units are central to the job outcomes of a particular industry or occupation. These are the units industry has agreed are essential to be capable and qualified at a particular study level.

Course delivery Combination study

Learn through a combination of classroom based, online and/or workplace activity. For example, you may participate in scheduled classroom activity, have an element of self-directed learning with online content, and/or receive supervised training while on the job, doing work experience, or on placement.

Classroom activity will be scheduled, but online learning can provide more flexibility. Teacher support will be provided for all study. Access to a computer with an internet connection is required.
