INDUSTRY DEMAND
The number of children in long day care is growing along with the Governments commitment to invest more than $40 billion into childcare support to 2021. As such, university qualified workers are experiencing high demand that continues to rise. This course provides a direct pathway into the bachelor degree.

TAFE NSW offers the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care as either a traineeship or non-traineeship, so you can create the career you want.
Non-traineeship

Traineeship
To be eligible for this course you must:
- Be employed in the care industry as this course is delivered in the workplace
- Have a signed traineeship contract

COURSE SUCCESS REQUIREMENTS
During your study, you will need to meet specific requirements that are necessary for you to complete your course work and be successful.
You will need to meet the following success requirements to be able to undertake work placement within industry. Your teacher will let you know when you need to provide evidence of:
- Working with Children Check (WWCC)
- Vaccination and health screenings
- Any additional evidence your work placement provider requires
WORK PLACEMENT
Work placement provides you with opportunities to practise responding to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.
During your course, you will undertake a mandatory 240 hours of work placement with a suitable industry employer.
TAFE Digital students: You are responsible for arranging your own work placement. Our SkillsTeam can offer support and guidance to assist you.
Campus-based students: TAFE NSW will arrange your work placement with a suitable industry employer.
Work placement generally only begins once you have had significant contact with your teacher and they are satisfied that you are ready to benefit from on-the-job industry learning.

To be prepared for this course, it is recommended that you have:
- A sound ability to read, write and speak English at Year 10 high school level

Physical ability
You must also have a reasonable level of fitness and flexibility to carry out:
- Manual lifting
- First aid responses including performing CPR while kneeling on the floor
Certain aspects of assessment rely on your physical ability to perform two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult and infant manikin at floor level, and respond to an emergency situation where there may be risk to life.
If you are unable to meet the physical requirements, you will not be able to successfully complete this course.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.
To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you have:
- Hold CHC30113 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care and provide an academic transcript, as evidence, prior to enrolment .You will need to show evidence of having successfully completed the CHC30113 Certificate III Early Childhood Education and Care to be eligible for this course. The Certificate III Early Childhood Education and Care will contribute to first semesters Diploma units by credit transfer (according to the transcripts).
- Complete a Working with Children Check-Anyone engaging in child-related work (including student placements and volunteers) MUST have a current Working with Children Check (students/volunteers free).
- Be physically fit to undertake tasks associated with the work placement (such as manual lifting)
- Be physically fit to undertake first aid responses including performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) while kneeling on the floor
- Follow TAFE NSW policy and procedures, adhering to NSW law when enrolling students under the age of 17- https://www.tafensw.edu.au/study/pathways/school-to-tafe. Students under 18 years of age will require signed consent from their parents or guardians for certain course written agreements
- First Aid-complete HLTAID004 Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting which will include a mandatory eight-hour face-to-face session
To successfully complete this course, you will need to:
- Attend TAFE on your designated course days
- Actively participate in all course instruction and activities
- Attend the designated group play sessions
Students are required to undertake a minimum of 240 hours of work placement in an Australian regulated education and care service.

STUDY COMMITMENT
This is a face to face part time evening course. You will need to attend approximately 10.8 hours of class, over 3 days a week, for 1 year. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 20.8 hours of other study per week.
You may also be required to complete approximately 2.8 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including reviewing class work, reading, study notes and personal thoughts/reflection.
IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?
This qualification reflects the role of workers in a range of early childhood education settings who work within the requirements of the Education and Care Services National Regulations and the National Quality Standard. They support the implementation of an approved learning framework, and support childrens wellbeing, learning and development. Depending on the setting, educators may work under direct supervision or autonomously.
To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 120 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of the units of competency.

If work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of your course, due to the impacts of COVID-19 there may be a delay or modification in being able to undertake these aspects of your course in the planned timeframe. Be assured, we'll keep you informed every step of the way.
This course is currently scheduled on Monday and Tuesday from 5.30pm to 8.30pm, and Friday from 9.30am to 12.30pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES
This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.
Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process.

PAYMENT OPTIONS AND ASSISTANCE
This course is approved for a Commonwealth VET Student Loan (VSL). If you meet the VSL eligibility and academic suitability requirements, you are able to apply to the Commonwealth for a loan to cover all or part of your course fee. We will ask you whether you would like to apply for a VET Student Loan when you enrol and advise you of the process.
To complete your VET Student Loan application, you will need to provide:
- Your Tax File Number (TFN). If you dont have a TFN, click here for information on how to apply for one. You can complete your loan application with a Certificate of Application for a TFN, but must provide your TFN as soon as it is issued. If you dont provide your TFN before your first census day, you will need to pay the tuition fees for that unit of study.
- Your Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Number (CHESSN) ). If you have previously accessed a loan via the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP), either at TAFE or university, you will already have a CHESSN. You must use the same CHESSN whenever you access a student loan. If you dont have CHESSN, we will allocate one on your behalf.
- A copy of your Australian Year 12 Certificate; OR
- A copy of a certificate showing that you have been awarded a qualification at level 4 or above in the Australian Qualifications Framework (where the language of instruction was English). If you previously completed a Certificate IV or higher qualification at TAFE NSW, just let us know where and when you studied in your application; OR
- Display competence at Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework in both reading and numeracy through an approved Language, Literacy and Numeracy test. We will let you know if this is required once you apply.
