Assessments

Assessments give you the opportunity to demonstrate what you have learnt and to identify the knowledge or skills that may need further development.

  • Skills assessments: role-play scenarios, presentations, practical, observation (including assessments in the workplace)

  • Knowledge assessments: multiple choice, true or false, short answer questions

  • Portfolio: samples of work in a workplace environment

Work placement

Work placement provides you with opportunities to respond to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.

  • To be enrolled in this course offering, you need to be able to meet the following work placement requirements:

    • 240 hours of Industry Engagement.

    This will begin in the second semester of your course, and an Industry Engagement Coordinator will, in consultation with you, help locate a work place for you to complete these Industry Engagement hours.

  • To be enrolled in this course offering, you need to be able to provide evidence that you have:

    • a Working with Childrens Check
    • a Criminal History Check

  • Information on how to obtain these will be provided at the Information Session and at Orientation. Information is also included below.

  • Working with Children's Check (WWCC)

  • A WWCC is a requirement for anyone who works or volunteers in child-related work in NSW. You can apply online for your WWCC. There is no fee for you as a student. To apply, go to https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/apply-working-children-check or search for WWCC NSW.

  • Police Check

  • A The Police check is required for placements that you will do as a part of your course. We understand that many students who are considering community services courses may have criminal convictions in their past. We encourage you to apply for your check in any case and if the outcome is of a concern for you, please discuss with teaching and or student support staff. Simply because a person may have a conviction on their record does not mean they are automatically excluded from placements or future work opportunities.

  • The police checks can be applied for online. Identity documents are required and each website will have information as to which documents are required and how to upload them.

Units Units taught in this course

Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Diploma of Mental Health qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 20 units of competency, including 15 core and 5 speciality units.

Core units are central to the job outcomes of a particular industry or occupation. These are the units industry has agreed are essential to be capable and qualified at a particular study level.

Course delivery Virtual classroom, off campus

Connect with your teachers and other students in a virtual classroom to participate in learning activities via video or web conferencing technology. You will be able to join the class from anywhere with a good internet connection, such as your home or a TAFE campus. If you would like to join from TAFE, please contact your local campus to book a space. Much like a regular class, you will have scheduled times of attendance. Depending on what you are studying, your course may also include some online units.
