The nationally accredited Certificate IV in Building Construction (Building) will give you the skills you to own and operate a licensed building enterprise. Designed for aspiring builders and construction managers, you will take your building expertise further and graduate with an industry-relevant qualification in this booming industry.

TAFE NSW offers the Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) as either a traineeship or non-traineeship, so you can?construct?the career you want.


There are no entry requirements for non-trainees. You can enrol in this course now.


To be eligible for this course you must:

  • Be employed in the building and construction industry as this course is delivered in the workplace
  • Have a signed traineeship contract

It is important to know that to be eligible to apply for your NSW Builders Licence, you must have completed a trade certificate in the Certificate III in Carpentry or Certificate III in Bricklaying and Blocklaying, as well as the Certificate IV in Building Construction (Building).

Completion of these qualifications will lead to a builders licence with NSW Fair-trading.

This is a Part Time Evening Face to Face course. You will need to attend approximately 10 hours of class, over 2-3 evenings a week, for 2 years.

You may also be required to complete approximately 22 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including Private study, research, assignment preparation and work experience.

You are required to attend the following: 1st Year Semester 1 - 11 hours of class a week over 3 Nights. 1st Year Semester 2 - 8 hours of class a week over 2 Nights. 2nd Year Semester 1 - 8 hours over 2 nights. 2nd Year Semester 2 - 8 hours over 3 nights.An indication of how your weekly timetable may look is:
2 - 3 Nights Per Week 5:30pm - 8:30pm or 9.30pm, except during Student Vacations. Duration: 2 years


This course offering is designed for people who:
-The Certificate IV Building and Construction qualifications will be used predominantly by people in the workforce as an apprentice or trades person, and school leavers seeking to extend/develop their skills and progress to supervisor or apply for a building licence. This qualification is part of the Construction, Plumbing and Services Training Package. It is for people entering employment in the Construction and related industry areas. Apprentices may enrol in this course. Mature age construction workers may enrol in this course. School leavers may enrol in this course.
Students will gain the base level competencies required by an operator working in these areas. They will acquire skills and knowledge in planning to undertake a routine task, occupational health and safety in the work environment, quality procedures, plus some industry-specific skills related to floor, wall and roof framing and use hand and power tools.

An important next step is to attend the orientation session on Wednesday, 22 January 2020, 10am - 6pm at TAFE NSW Randwick, Corner of Darley Road and Alison Road, Randwick, Building B, Level 2, Room B2.32.
Your first class will start the week beginning 3rd February 2020, at Randwick TAFE depending on your program.
At your orientation you will be provided with your timetable, assessment guides and the support services provided by Sydney TAFE.

This course is currently scheduled on Monday 5:30pm to 9:30pm, except during Student Vacations. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.


This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
