The nationally accredited Certificate IV in Building Construction (Building) will give you the skills you to own and operate a licensed building enterprise. Designed for aspiring builders and construction managers, you will take your building expertise further and graduate with an industry-relevant qualification in this booming industry.

As population growth drives employment in the residential construction sector, in both new dwellings and renovations, the Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) will give you what you need to meet demand.

There are no entry requirements for non-trainees. You can enrol in this course now.


To be eligible for this course you must:

  • Have a signed traineeship contract

It is important to know that to be eligible to apply for your NSW Builders Licence, you must have completed a trade certificate in the Certificate III in Carpentry or Certificate III in Bricklaying and Blocklaying, as well as the Certificate IV in Building Construction (Building).

Completion of these qualifications will lead to a builders licence with NSW Fair-trading.

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • To have an LLN level at ASCF Level 3 and above in order to successfully complete the course.
  • Existing skills and knowledge required to enter and/or successfully complete course.
  • There are no formal educational entry requirements for this course however, TAFE NSW recommends completion of the construction trade (or equivalent) for entry into this course. Students may also be accepted if they are of mature age and possess sufficient literacy, numeracy, visual and computer skills to successfully complete the course.

An important next step is to attend your orientation session on Monday 25 January 2021, from 5.30pm at TAFE NSW Albury. Building K, Ground Level, Room 19. It is a requirement that you bring your TAFE NSW email and password with you to this orientation session.

The orientation session requires face to face attendance for learning and assessment material access (if you are unable to attend please call 131 601 to get in touch with your teacher). Upon receiving this information students can study through a flexible option (on campus, face to face, from home, online or watching the recording).


This is a connected part time evening course. You will need to attend approximately 9 hours of class delivered flexibly, over 3 evenings a week, for 40 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 10 hours of other study per week, this includes individual learning support if required, private study, research, assessment preparation and project work.

You may also be required to complete additional study each week outside of class hours dependant on the student.

Delivery options will be confirmed by your teacher and may be subject to change due to enrolment numbers and Covid restrictions. Currently there will be teachers located throughout the South Region NSW - depending on numbers and student demand. You can attend any TAFE location (upon request) with access provided through online connected delivery.

You will also be permitted to study from home if required, all lessons will be available through Microsoft Teams - allowing you the flexibility to watch from any location and/or view recordings if required.

This course is offered by Connected Classroom.  This is just like a regular classroom, but teachers and students use the latest video conferencing technologies.

Your teacher can be in one TAFE location, and you can join the class from another TAFE location using video conferencing equipment or a mobile device. You can also join in from a venue in a participating regional community. You will be able to see and talk to your teacher and other students as though they were in the room with you. You will also have access to support to meet your learning needs.

  • Already have a sound knowledge of the construction industry, most suitable for completed carpentry and bricklaying trades that are possibly wanting to obtain their builders licence.

If work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of your course, due to the impacts of COVID-19 there may be a delay or modification in being able to undertake these aspects of your course in the planned timeframe. Be assured, we'll keep you informed every step of the way.

This course is currently scheduled on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 5.30pm to 8.00pm. Teachers will be available half an hour before and after class to assist with individual learning where required.

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
