Building and construction skills continue to be in high demand; with employment in New South Wales forecast to increase to approximately 15,040 jobs to 2024/25.
As population growth drives employment in the residential construction sector, in both new dwellings and renovations, the Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) will give you what you need to meet demand.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
TAFE NSW offers the Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) as either a traineeship or non-traineeship, so you can?construct?the career you want.
Non-traineeship
There are no entry requirements for non-trainees. You can enrol in this course now.
Traineeship
To be eligible for this course you must:
- Be employed in the building and construction industry as this course is delivered in the workplace
- Have a signed traineeship contract

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS
It is important to know that to be eligible to apply for your NSW Builders Licence, you must have completed a trade certificate in the Certificate III in Carpentry or Certificate III in Bricklaying and Blocklaying, as well as the Certificate IV in Building Construction (Building).
Completion of these qualifications will lead to a builders licence with NSW Fair-trading.
Check with the relevant state and territory licensing and regulatory authorities. State and territory jurisdictions may have different regulatory requirements.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.
To successfully complete this course, you will need:

STUDY COMMITMENT
This is a part time evening, face to face course. You will need to attend approximately 7 hours of class, over 2 evenings a week, for 18 months.
You may also be required to complete approximately 20.4 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including revision, self directed activities, portfolio, research and assignment preparation.

This course offering is designed for people who:
- want to become builders and managers of small to medium building businesses.
It provides students with the skills and knowledge required to co-ordinate the overall construction of low-rise buildings, which entails selecting contractors, overseeing the work and its quality, as well as liasing with clients.
This course is also designed for trades people looking to gain a Fair Trading NSW Builders licence. (OFT have strict qualification requirements that students should check for themselves before enrolling in this course as this course alone will not make them eligible for a licence).

SMART AND SKILLED FEES
This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.
Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
