Course Details

Be ready to work as a site manager on exciting infrastructure projects when you study the nationally accredited Diploma in Building and Construction (Building). You will learn on-the-job with your employer and in TAFE NSW simulated work environments. Advance your building and construction leadership skills and use your industry experience to become a licensed builder.


Through theory and practical course work, you will learn to:

  • Manage construction work
  • Plan onsite medium rise buildings
  • Prepare tender documents
  • Manage contracts and contractors
  • Apply structural principles to low and medium rise construction
  • Apply quality standards to the selection of materials and apply building codes

To be eligible for this course, you will need to demonstrate that you have:

  • Achieved the Certificate IV in Building & Construction (Building), or its equivalent
  • Current relevant employment

You will also need to provide a letter of support from your employer confirming:

  • Your ongoing employment
  • That you have supervised access to different types of building sites (residential, industrial and commercial) at varying stages of construction
  • Support for your engagement in workplace activities to reinforce your learning


TAFE NSW also offers the Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) as a traineeship. To undertake this course as a traineeship you must meet the entry requirements above as well as submit your signed traineeship contract.


During your study, you will need to meet specific requirements that are necessary for you to complete your course work and be successful.

Your teacher will let you know when you need to provide evidence of:

  • A general construction induction card (commonly known as a white card) - you will need this before you can enter a construction site


To be prepared for this course, it is recommended that you have:

  • NSW Year 12 high school certificate
  • English language and literacy and math skills to a Year 12 high school level
  • The ability to communicate effectively
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Planning and organisational skills to organise and coordinate construction
  • Experience using computers in a work context
  • Attention to detail

Occupational licenses are required if you want to work as a builder nationally. State and territory jurisdictions have different regulatory requirements depending on the level of licensing you need. Check with your state or territory licensing and regulatory authorities regarding their educational requirements.


With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you are:

  • A SafeWork NSW General Construction Induction Card (White Card) is required before enrolling into this qualification. Achievement of unit CPCCWHS1001 covers this requirement for the general induction training program as specified by the National Code of Practice for Induction Training for Construction Work (ASCC 2007). Students must also have completed CPC40110 Certificate IV in Building & Construction (Building), or its equivalent, before enrolling into this qualification. As a part of their Certificate IV qualification, students must have also completed CPCCBC4013A Prepare and Evaluate Tender Documentation unit.

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • To confirm that you are able to gain supervised access to a number of building sites (residential, industrial and commercial) at various stages of construction.

This is a Part Time Evening Face to Face course. You will need to attend approximately 20 hours of class, over 3 days a week, for 1 year.

You may also be required to complete approximately 20 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including private study, research, exam preparation


This course offering is designed for people who:

  • Have a desire to work in construction management supervising construction sites or work in affiliated industry areas such as facilities management (building managers) & property development. Success in this course combined with the Diploma of Building or a Certificate III (trade level) in Carpentry or Bricklaying satisfies the Office of Fair Trading's NSW builder's licensing educational requirements. To qualify for the builder's licence you will need additional industry experience. This course can also be combined with various university degrees such as structural engineering and architectural courses to qualify for the NSW builder's licence. For more information go to

This course is currently scheduled on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30 pm to 5:00 pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.


This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process.

This course is approved for a Commonwealth VET Student Loan (VSL). If you meet the VSL eligibility and academic suitability requirements, you are able to apply to the Commonwealth for a loan to cover all or part of your course fee. We will ask you whether you would like to apply for a VET Student Loan when you enrol and advise you of the process.

To complete your VET Student Loan application, you will need to provide:

  • Your Tax File Number (TFN). If you dont have a TFN, click here for information on how to apply for one. You can complete your loan application with a Certificate of Application for a TFN, but must provide your TFN as soon as it is issued. If you dont provide your TFN before your first census day, you will need to pay the tuition fees for that unit of study.
  • Your Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Number (CHESSN) ). If you have previously accessed a loan via the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP), either at TAFE or university, you will already have a CHESSN. You must use the same CHESSN whenever you access a student loan. If you dont have CHESSN, we will allocate one on your behalf.
To be eligible for a VET Student Loan, you will need to be assessed as academically suitable to undertake high level VET study. You will need to provide:
  • A copy of your Australian Year 12 Certificate; OR
  • A copy of a certificate showing that you have been awarded a qualification at level 4 or above in the Australian Qualifications Framework (where the language of instruction was English). If you previously completed a Certificate IV or higher qualification at TAFE NSW, just let us know where and when you studied in your application; OR
  • Display competence at Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework in both reading and numeracy through an approved Language, Literacy and Numeracy test. We will let you know if this is required once you apply.

You will need to provide for yourself the following resources which you will keep when you complete your study:
Indicative cost for stationery, textbooks and including purchase of a calculator is $300.
