Course Details

The nationally recognised Diploma of Building Design will teach you sought-after technical skills and allow you to work as an architectural draftsperson or building designer. Specialise in residential projects such as new buildings or renovations, or undertake commercial and industrial projects.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

You need to be registered with the accrediting body, Building Designers Association of Australia (BDAA) to apply for jobs in the industry.

In NSW, the Environmental Planning Assessment Act Regulation requires that an architect or an accredited building designer who designs or immediately directs the design of the development is required to follow the Low Rise Housing Diversity Code requirements for complying with development.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

To be prepared for this course, it is recommended that you have:

  • Successfully completed the NSW Higher School Certificate (or equivalent) to ensure you have the literacy, numeracy, visual and computer skills necessary to study at this level
  • A computer that can run a 3D CAD software program, such as Revit or ArchiCAD and basic computer skills (with the potential to develop CAD skills)
  • An interest in the building design industry
  • Strong communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Great spatial awareness
  • The ability to solve complex problems
  • Good time management skills

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To successfully complete this course, you will need access to the internet and a computer with word processing and spreadsheet programmes & the ability to dedicate yourself to your studies.

You are required to provide evidence prior to enrolment of:

1: This is a Smart and Skilled government subsidised course. To be able to enrol students must be eligible for Smart & Skilled and provide one of the following: Australian birth certificate or citizenship papers or passport that shows you are either: an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, a humanitarian visa holder or a New Zealand citizen

2: To be able to enrol and obtain a student loan you must be academically suited to the course, and satisfy one of the following:

  • provide a valid copy of your Senior Secondary Certificate of Education showing satisfactory completion of year 12 or
  • achieve an exit level 4 in the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) assessment in both reading and numeracy (provided free for applicants)
  • provide a copy of an Australian qualification at AQF level 4 or higher or an overseas qualification verified as being equivalent by an approved agency, and that the course was delivered in English

If you do apply for the VET Student Loan you will need to have your Tax File Number (TFN) handy. If you do not have a TFN you can apply for one through most Australia Post outlets, and obtain a Certificate of Application for the TFN. Once you receive your TFN from the Australian Tax Office (ATO) you MUST contact your college so they can arrange for you to enter it into your VET Student Loan application.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a full time course. You will need to attend approx 10.5 hours of class, 3 days a week, for 72 weeks (18 Months). As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 4.5 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 7.5 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including self directed learning includes private research, assessment preparation, review of learning, and private study.

This course offering is designed for people who have a desire to work as a building designer or work in affiliated industry areas such as facilities management & property development. Success in this course can faciltate entry into most architectural courses at university.

MORE ABOUT THIS COURSE

Attendance is generally face to face in the classroom. Additionally once classes are running students will have the option to participate via online classes delivered online using Microsoft Teams, i.e. students will have the option of either blended delivery online or face to face classes. Staff are able to guide students in how to access and use Microsoft Teams software effectively.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process.

PAYMENT OPTIONS AND ASSISTANCE

This course is approved for a Commonwealth VET Student Loan (VSL). If you meet the VSL eligibility and academic suitability requirements, you are able to apply to the Commonwealth for a loan to cover all or part of your course fee. We will ask you whether you would like to apply for a VET Student Loan when you enrol and advise you of the process.

To complete your VET Student Loan application, you will need to provide:

  • Your Tax File Number (TFN). If you dont have a TFN, click here for information on how to apply for one. You can complete your loan application with a Certificate of Application for a TFN, but must provide your TFN as soon as it is issued. If you dont provide your TFN before your first census day, you will need to pay the tuition fees for that unit of study.
  • Your Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Number (CHESSN) ). If you have previously accessed a loan via the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP), either at TAFE or university, you will already have a CHESSN. You must use the same CHESSN whenever you access a student loan. If you dont have CHESSN, we will allocate one on your behalf.
To be eligible for a VET Student Loan, you will need to be assessed as academically suitable to undertake high level VET study. You will need to provide:
  • A copy of your Australian Year 12 Certificate; OR
  • A copy of a certificate showing that you have been awarded a qualification at level 4 or above in the Australian Qualifications Framework (where the language of instruction was English). If you previously completed a Certificate IV or higher qualification at TAFE NSW, just let us know where and when you studied in your application; OR
  • Display competence at Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework in both reading and numeracy through an approved Language, Literacy and Numeracy test. We will let you know if this is required once you apply.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

You will need to provide for yourself the following resources which you will keep when you complete your study:

It is recommended that students purchase three books costing approximately $35 each and sundry stationery costing approx. $70

Students will need a recent desktop or notebook computer that can open and save .doc files (Word) and to run the CAD software needed in the course. Graphisoft ArchiCAD is used and is available free to students. Minimium recommended computer specifications are:

  • System: Windows 10 (64-bit) / Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan
  • CPU: 64-bit processor with 4 or more cores. Note: Processors with 4-8+ cores are recommended to fully exploit ARCHICADs performance capabilities.
  • RAM: 8 GB RAM is recommended. 16 GB RAM is highly recommended.
  • Display: Resolution of 1440 x 900 is recommended.
  • Video Card: OpenGL 2.0 compatible graphics card with on-board memory of 1024 MB is recommended to fully exploit hardware acceleration capabilities.
  • Hard disk with 50GB available space
