Course Details

This skill set provides pest management technicians with the competencies required to inspect premises for non-timber pests, excluding complex or high risk operations such as hospitals. It also covers developing pest management plans, and with the agreement of the client, implementing pest management methods including application of pesticides or modification of the environment. It also covers maintaining pest management equipment and chemical storage areas.

This skill set is for people who provide an urban pest management service managing non-timber pests.

Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to pest management in some States. Relevant state and territory regulatory authorities should be consulted to confirm those requirements

The skill set is applicable in some States but does not meet the full licensing requirements of all States and Territories.

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you are:

  • either be working in the pest control industry or be able to have access to sites used in the pest control industry, to be able to complete the workplace assessment tasks under the supervision of a licenced Pest Technician.
  • able to demonstrate the following pest management equipment: bait stations, electric dust applicator, pump up sprayer, fogger or mister. If you do not have access to this equipment you may be required to attend a practical session to demonstrate use.
  • able to demonstrate yourself applying pesticide liquids, powders, gels and granules , installing and securing baits and undertaking a space treatment using a fogger or mister that involves preparation, no-entry notification, ventilation and re-entry processes, within the 12 months.

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • access to suitable pest control workplace sites to be able to complete the assesment tasks. You must be able to be involved and collect evidence for at least ten separate pest treatments that involve cockroaches, ants, rodents and spiders and four from the following list within 12 months: bed bugs, bees and wasps, birds, fabric pests, fleas, flies, mites, book lice, stored product pests, occasional invaders (amphipods, millipedes, springtails, thrips).

This is a online course. You will need to complete approximately 3 hours of online study, each week, for your enrolment duration of 1 year.
You can increase the hours of online study per week to complete the course sooner.

You may also be required to complete approximately 3 hours of additional study each week outside of online study hours, including private study and research, assessment preperation and workplace experience.


This course offering is designed for people who:

  • are existing workers
  • are able to undertake supervised work in an organisation that undertakes pest management activities

Students must have access to a pest management sites, pest management equipment and it is essential that a licenced pest manager is available to work with students, allowing them to practice and also undertake their assessments while operating under the EPA NSW Training Permit.

If you are not an existing worker then you will need to be able to make arrangements to be able to participate in a worksite that undertakes Pest Management activities under supervision of licenced pest manager.

An individual training plan will be provided when you enrol in this course. Your plan will outline the recommended study timetable and detail your units and assessments.

This training is not subsidised by Government funding. There are no fee exemptions, concessions or subsidies available for this course.
