Course Details

Are you looking to delve into the world of design but need a solid foundation of guiding principles? The Certificate III in Design Fundamentals will give you design career foundations.

There are a number of versions of this course which focus on different career areas. All versions of the course have core units that cover:

  • Design processes
  • Use of colour
  • Creative design in 2D and 3D forms
  • Source and apply design industry knowledge
  • Understand the WHS process
  • Produce drawings that communicate your creative ideas

In the location listing of the course, you can see the versions of the design disciplines you can focus on, and choose based on your interests and career goals. These might include:

  • GRAPHIC DESIGN. Get an introduction to the latest equipment and technology used to produce work in design as well covering the essential skills such as drawing, type usage and design group work

  • JEWELLERY DESIGN. Conceptualise, design and create original bespoke jewellery pieces using a range of materials and techniques

  • ILLUSTRATION. Develop a range of drawing skills using digital programs such as Illustrator as well as drawing using traditional techniques and materials

  • CERAMICS. Design and realise a body of ceramic work using basic skills using the latest ceramics technologies, materials and processes

  • FASHION DESIGN. Gain strong foundational skills in fashion illustration, colour theory, technical production sketches, Computer Aided Design specific for fashion design, as well as some fashion industry knowledge

  • TEXTILE DESIGN AND PRINTING. Gain foundational skills in illustration, colour theory, design principles, fabric print design, Computer Aided Design specific for fabric print design, as well as some textile industry knowledge

  • MULTI-DISCIPLINE DESIGN. Learn a broad range of design skills such as computer aided drawing, illustration

  • DESIGN FOR THEATRE AND FILM. Learn about prop making and digital illustration.

When you study with TAFE NSW, we want you to succeed. Entry requirements allow us to make sure that you have the right pre-existing knowledge and skills to achieve your chosen qualification. You will need to provide evidence that you meet the requirements listed in this section.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

It is assumed that you have literacy and numeracy at Certificate II level for success in this course. Contact your TAFE NSW campus if you have any questions about your suitability.

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to:

This is a Full time Face to Face course. You will need to attend approximately 18 hours of class, over 3 days a week, for 17 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 14 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 5 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including Self-paced study, research and practice at home or on campus.


This introductory course is designed for students who have an interest in starting a creative career but have only limited, or no practical design experience or skills. It is most suitable for people looking to begin their study of design practices in order to move into further educational opportunities.

This course is currently scheduled on Tuesday 10:30am-5:30pm, Wednesday 9:00am-6:30pm, Thursday 9:30am-4:30pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.


This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

You will need to provide for yourself the following resources which you will keep when you complete your study: Additonal resources will be required to successfully complete this course and will cost approximately $190.00 for materials/consumables, subsidising field trips and visits, safety equipment and/or toolkits and general resources.
