Course Details

The nationally accredited Certificate III in Music Industry (Music Business) takes you backstage to discover how the music business works. Gain skills to join the industry in an exciting career with a record company, independent label, music publisher or in band management.

INDUSTRY DEMAND

Australia is the sixth largest music market in the world. By 2023 our total spend on music will reach $1.791b with a staggering $763m spent on digital distribution alone. The Federal Government recognises the importance of music and allocated $30.9m towards local live music in the 2019 budget.

COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you have a basic understanding of:

  • the local music industry with regards to performers, venues, rehearsal spaces and studios
  • music and media outlets in the music industry
  • what is involved in a music business course and how it could relate to a possible career

To successfully complete this course, you will need to:

  • attend classes during the day, 2 days a week, 8 hours a day
  • complete a minimum of 10 hours of assessment work per week
  • participate in a minimum of 8 hours of industry engagement per week; this may include preparing for gigs, researching trends, listening to music, going to gigs and events and/or participating in a range of independent creative projects
  • have a general command of written and spoken English

STUDY COMMITMENT This is a full time course. You will need to attend approximately 16 hours of class, over 2 days a week, for 18 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 18.3 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 8.3 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including preparing for gigs, researching trends, listening to music, going to gigs and events and/or participating in a range of independent creative projects.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU? This course offering is designed for people who want to work in the creative industries and:

  • have a love of music
  • have some basic skills in running and promoting gigs
  • want to know more about copyright, contracts, music promotion, online marketing and the staging of gigs and events
  • want to learn from highly experienced teachers who are leading engineers and musicians in the music industry and will provide you with extensive knowledge and techniques
  • are aged over 16
  • have recently left school, changing study options from academic study to vocational training, or between jobs, and wanting to transition to a new career

If students are unsure of their level of music knowledge and experience, other study options are available, such as Certificate II in Music Industry, to support your music studies.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process.
