The nationally accredited Certificate III in Music Industry (Music Business) takes you backstage to discover how the music business works. Gain skills to join the industry in an exciting career with a record company, independent label, music publisher or in band management.

INDUSTRY DEMAND

Australia is the sixth largest music market in the world. By 2023 our total spend on music will reach $1.791b with a staggering $763m spent on digital distribution alone. The Federal Government recognises the importance of music and allocated $30.9m towards local live music in the 2019 budget.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

TAFE NSW offers the Certificate III in Music Industry (Music Business) as either a traineeship or non-traineeship, so you can create the career you want.

Non-traineeship

There are no entry requirements for non-trainees. You can enrol in this course now.

Traineeship

To be eligible for this course you must:

  • Be employed in the music industry as this course is delivered in the workplace
  • Have a signed traineeship contract

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a full time, blended course. You will need to attend approximately 16 hours of class, over 3 days a week, for 17 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 11 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 9 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including study, research, assignment preparation, and industry events.

You will build foundation skills and knowledge in managing recording artists, songwriters and producers, putting on shows, promotions, copyright, microbusiness and more. This Certificate III leads to entry level positions in the music industry, or you may progress to a Diploma and a degree for greater career opportunities. This is also excellent for musicians and producers who want to learn to advance their career.

If work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of your course, due to the impacts of COVID-19 there may be a delay or modification in being able to undertake these aspects of your course in the planned timeframe. Be assured, we'll keep you informed every step of the way.

This course is currently scheduled on Tuesday from 9:30am to 12:30pm, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:30am to 4:30pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

Additional costs to successfully complete this course possibly include attending live shows outside of class hours. It would be helpful if you had your own computer or iPad to complete classwork, but you can use them in class and in the campus library.
