The number of people working as music professionals has grown moderately and is expected to remain stable over the next 5 to 2023 with around 8,000 job openings (that's about 1,600 a year).

To be prepared for this course, it is recommended that you have:

  • Completed your Certificate III in Music Industry (Performance)
  • An ability to play an instrument and/or perform as a vocalist
  • an ability to compose music or songs, or both
  • Digital, literacy and numeracy skills

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

No minimum education standards are required for this course. However, a general command of spoken and written English, as well as the ability to write a simple report is required. This course requires the satisfactory completion of oral, written and practical tasks.

This course requires students to dedicate approximately 8 hours a week towards assessment activities outside of class time.

There are also a number of face to face assessment hours outside of timetabled class times for concerts.

This is a full time, face to face course. You will need to attend approximately 14 hours of class, over 2 days a week, for 36 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 7.3 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 2.2 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including rehearsals and performances, also networking and voluntary placement.

Some assessment events will require you to attend campus on other days that are not part of your regular schedule.


This course offering is designed for:

  • Learners with a Certificate III in Music Industry (CUA30915)
  • Learners transitioning from University (e.g. Creative Production and/or Communication programs) to Vocational Training
  • Learners who are existing practitioners with +2 years experience in music sound technology or Performance, without a relevant lower level qualification
  • Unemployed people - with a minimum of 3 years of vocational experience - without a relevant lower level qualification who are transitioning to a new career

The learners will primarily be sourced from the local music industry, not to the exclusion of the state, national and international market.

Be assured, we'll keep you informed every step of the way.

This course is currently scheduled on Monday 10.00am to 5.00pm and Wednesday 9.00am to 3.00pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.


This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
