Course Details

The nationally recognised Certificate IV in Photography and Photo Imaging develops the practical skills and knowledge you need to work as a professional photographer. Develop your abilities with camera technology, editing software, and work with clients to produce quality images every time.

  • An interest in using digital and analogue technologies
  • Some knowledge of digital photography technology, including cameras and camera accessories
  • The ability to travel to off-site locations

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you:

  • have basic literacy and numeracy skills and basic computer skills on entry to this course. These skills will be obtained at school level as all learners will have at least Year 10 or equivalent.

We require learners to sit a Literacy, Language and Numeracy (LLN) assessment before the start of classes. If they do not have the required levels, we ask them to complete further preliminary study which adds to the volume of learning.

No pre-requisites or portfolio is required at this level.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a full time, blended delivery course. You will need to attend approximately 19.7 hours of class, over 3-4 days a week, for 18 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 12 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 16 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including private study (homework), assignment preparation, workplace simulations, work experience, field trips, exhibitions and research. The delivery and content of this course has been discussed with industry who support the amount of hours of learning for this qualification.

This course offering is designed for people who:

  • are wanting a career in photography.
  • are usually school leavers, but some are seeking a career change.

Once complete, learners could enrol into the course CUA50915 Diploma of Photography and Photo Imaging. At the completion of the qualification the learners may work in a range of industry contexts, including commercial, domestic portrait, media, wedding, illustrative, institutional and art photography.

If work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of your course, there may be a modification or delay in the planned timeframe due to COVID-19 impacts. This course is currently scheduled on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 9.30am to 4.30pm, and Thursday from 1.30pm to 4.30pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

Students should have access to a digital camera and portable HDD for use in class and for assessments. Students should also have access to a computer or laptop with appropriate software for using outside of class time. Other photographic equipment will be discussed at the orientation session.
