TAFE NSW REQUIREMENTS

TAFE NSW offers the Certificate IV in Screen and Media as either a traineeship or non-traineeship.

Non-traineeship

There are no TAFE NSW entry requirements for non-traineeship students in this qualification.

** Traineeship**

To be eligible for this course you must:

  • Be employed in the industry as this course is delivered in the workplace
  • Have a signed traineeship contract

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

There are specific licensing requirements that are necessary if you are entering a worksite where dogging and rigging or construction is required. In this qualification, worksites may include film and television or outside broadcasts.

  1. The National Standard for Licensing Persons Performing High Risk Work applies to persons performing dogging and rigging work. Completion of the following units is required for certification at either basic, intermediate or advanced levels:
  • CPCCLDG3001A Licence to perform dogging
  • CPCCLRG3001A Licence to perform rigging basic level
  • CPCCLRG3002A Licence to perform rigging intermediate level
  • CPCCLRG4001A Licence to perform rigging advanced level
  1. The National Code of Practice for Induction for Construction Work
    Sets and staging for some performances or events may fall within the definition of construction work. Achievement of the unit 'CPCCOHS1001A Work safely in the construction industry' from the CPC08 Construction, Plumbing and Services Training Package fulfils this requirement.

BE PREPARED

To be prepared for this course, it is recommended that you have:

  • A passion for being creative
  • A desire to move into one of these exciting creative fields: animation, film and TV production, sound design, radio journalism or radio broadcasting
  • An interest in, or basic understanding of, the skills and knowledge required in industry
  • An interest in, or some introductory experience of, animation or video
  • A drive for capturing a story for screen or TV

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • You will need a medium level of computer skills and the ability to work well with others. It helps if you enjoy watching movies, TV shows and YouTube, and are keen to working in one of those areas.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a Full Time blended course. You will need to attend approximately 18.5 hours of class, over 3-4 days a week, for 25 weeks.

You may also be required to complete approximately 8.5 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including in addition to structured classes, you will need to engage in self-paced study, research and practice at home or on campus to adequately develop and refine your practical projects and assignments. (independent study, research, practice and assignments).

This course is taught face to face on campus, with elements of connected classes online, with live teachers and classmates on interactive webinars. If there are Covid restrictions there might be a larger percentage of online training. Either way, we will ensure you get all the skills, knowledge and experience you are after.

In addition to attending classes approximately 16 hours per week, 2 days per week for 3 terms, you should plan to spend some hours outside of class studying and working on your productions. The timetable may include Saturday and evening classes. Your timetable will be emailed to you prior to the first class.

This course offering is designed for people who:

  • Do you want to work in the Film and TV industry? With no prior experience, this is your chance to learn script writing shooting, lighting, shooting, camera work, production, editing, working on a team, and the basics of the Film and TV business. Upon successful completion, you can progress to Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media focused on Film and TV, and raise your skills to a professional level.

To keep you safe while studying, some of our face to face classes may be replaced with online or connected learning. This course is currently scheduled on Monday from 9.00am to 4.30pm, and Tuesday from 9.30am to 5.00pm.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
