TAFE NSW REQUIREMENTS

TAFE NSW offers the Certificate IV in Screen and Media as either a traineeship or non-traineeship.

Non-traineeship

There are no TAFE NSW entry requirements for non-traineeship students in this qualification.

** Traineeship**

To be eligible for this course you must:

  • Be employed in the industry as this course is delivered in the workplace
  • Have a signed traineeship contract

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

There are specific licensing requirements that are necessary if you are entering a worksite where dogging and rigging or construction is required. In this qualification, worksites may include film and television or outside broadcasts.

  1. The National Standard for Licensing Persons Performing High Risk Work applies to persons performing dogging and rigging work. Completion of the following units is required for certification at either basic, intermediate or advanced levels:
  • CPCCLDG3001A Licence to perform dogging
  • CPCCLRG3001A Licence to perform rigging basic level
  • CPCCLRG3002A Licence to perform rigging intermediate level
  • CPCCLRG4001A Licence to perform rigging advanced level
  1. The National Code of Practice for Induction for Construction Work
    Sets and staging for some performances or events may fall within the definition of construction work. Achievement of the unit 'CPCCOHS1001A Work safely in the construction industry' from the CPC08 Construction, Plumbing and Services Training Package fulfils this requirement.

BE PREPARED

To be prepared for this course, it is recommended that you have:

  • A passion for being creative
  • A desire to move into one of these exciting creative fields: animation, film and TV production, sound design, radio journalism or radio broadcasting
  • An interest in, or basic understanding of, the skills and knowledge required in industry
  • An interest in, or some introductory experience of, animation or video
  • A drive for capturing a story for screen or TV

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • English language proficiency (both written and spoken)
  • To have access to a smart phone or similar device (a limited number of suitable devices are available to borrow from the Library)
  • To work to deadlines, and receive constructive critical feedback about your work and performance
  • To prioritise time to consume a range of media, including news

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a full time face to face course. You will need to attend approximately 6.2 hours of class, over 2 days a week, for 33 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 4.2 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 8.5 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including self-paced study, research and practice outside of class to adequately develop and refine your practical projects and assessments. This inludes consuming news via social media, listening to the radio, watching video and TV, as well as making media content (writing scripts and articles, taking photos, recording audio and video).

NOTE: This course is face to face on campus, with some sessions run online with live teachers and classmates in interactive webinars. We did that during Covid-19 and it was very successful and popular. So if Covid restrictions increase again, you will still enjoy this highly social course and get the career potential that you are after.

If you do not have sufficient computer or internet access at home, you may be able to use a computer lab at the Ultimo.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

You will gain skills, knowledge and experience in the foundations of good journalism and media production: writing, research, interviewing and ethics. You?ll learn blogging and social media, MoJo (mobile journalism), photography, how to record and edit audio, video, and some radio and TV presentation. You have the opportunity to publish work on our student news website, "Off Campus". Upon successful completion, you can progress to Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media focused on Radio Broadcasting and raise your skills to a professional level.

If work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of your course, due to the impacts of COVID-19 there may be a delay or modification in being able to undertake these aspects of your course in the planned timeframe. Be assured, we'll keep you informed every step of the way.

This course is currently scheduled on Tuesday and Wednesday from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

There are minimal other costs and materials required to successfully complete this course. Ad hoc expenses may include the purchase of smart phone apps, or entry fees for excursions. The total of these costs are not expected to exceed $50 for the duration of the course.
