Course Details

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who design for live theatre performance. They execute judgements across a broad range of technical functions in the entertainment industry and have a wide range of specialised technical, creative or conceptual skills. They have autonomy in performing and can be responsible for planning, coordinating and evaluating the work of others within broad parameters.

National Code of Practice for Induction for Construction Work: Sets and staging for some performances or events may fall within the definition of construction work. If so, people entering the construction site are required to complete the general induction training program specified by the National Code of Practice for Induction Training for Construction Work (Australian Safety Compensation Council, May 2007). Achievement of the unit 'CPCCOHS1001A Work safely in the construction industry' from the CPC08 Construction, Plumbing and Services Training Package fulfils this requirement.

Entry to this qualification is limited to those who:

1. Have completed CUSOHS301A Follow occupational health and safety procedures or can demonstrate equivalence; and
2. Are able to demonstrate production design skills that support learning at Diploma level.

In particular, they must be able to provide evidence of their ability to:
  • engage with the design process by developing solutions through research, reflection and generating and refining ideas;
  • produce a body of design work demonstrating the ability to respond effectively and creatively to design challenges and requirements;
  • refine concepts in line with current industry standards; and
  • apply knowledge of trends and traditions in at least one of the following areas:
  • costume
  • lighting
  • scenery and props
  • screen and media
  • sound
  • staging
  • vision systems.

    Those skills and knowledge may have been acquired through personal or work experience, or through formal study.

    COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
    To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you are:

  • an apprentice (you will work in industry and study at the same time)
  • employed full time
  • signed up with an Apprentice Network Provider and have a Training Plan Proposal
  • seeking to gain skills and knowledge to become qualified after successful completion (e.g. carpenter, electrician, hairdresser, etc.)
  • Production design skills in relation to theatre & or stage.
  • You will be required to present a portfolio of original drawings and design work that support learning at Diploma level.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a face to face, full time course. You will need to attend approximately 19 hours of class a week, over 3 - 4 days per week, for 36 weeks.

You can also expect approximately 16 hours of additional study each week including private study, assignment preparation and research outside of class hours.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

This course offering is designed for people who: - Minimum pre-requisite Certificate IV in Design / or equivalent. - This Learner group consists of individuals that have completed one or a combination of the following: - CUA30715 Certificate III in Design Fundamentals - CUA40715 Certificate IV in Design - Degrees of parts thereof in Visual Arts - Diplomas & Advanced Diplomas in other design disciplines (i.e. Fashion, Industrial, and Interior). - Experience in the workplace for example: professional and community theatre and festivals. - In exceptional circumstances learners that have excelled in Design & Technology and/or Visual Arts at high school and/or design and construction for school theatrical productions.

This course is currently scheduled on Monday from 9:00am to 4:30pm, Tuesday from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, and Wednesday from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.

PAYMENT OPTIONS AND ASSISTANCE
This course is approved for a Commonwealth VET Student Loan (VSL). If you meet the VSL eligibility and academic suitability requirements, you are able to apply to the Commonwealth for a loan to cover all or part of your course fee. We will ask you whether you would like to apply for a VET Student Loan when you enrol and advise you of the process.

Direct payment by Unit of Study instalments is available for this course.

The Units of Study and associated fees for this course are detailed below. Fees are charged on the census day for each Unit of Study. To secure a loan for part or all of your course, you must be eligible and submit a valid application to the Commonwealth for a VET Student Loan. You may withdraw prior to the census date without incurring a fee.

You will need to provide for yourself the following resources which you will keep when you complete your study:
Additonal resources will be required to successfully complete this course and will cost approximately $190.00 for materials/consumables, subsidising field trips and visits, safety equipment and/or toolkits and general resources.


To complete your VET Student Loan application, you will need to provide:

  • Your Tax File Number (TFN). If you dont have a TFN, click here for information on how to apply for one. You can complete your loan application with a Certificate of Application for a TFN, but must provide your TFN as soon as it is issued. If you dont provide your TFN before your first census day, you will need to pay the tuition fees for that unit of study.
  • Your Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Number (CHESSN) ). If you have previously accessed a loan via the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP), either at TAFE or university, you will already have a CHESSN. You must use the same CHESSN whenever you access a student loan. If you dont have CHESSN, we will allocate one on your behalf.

To be eligible for a VET Student Loan, you will need to be assessed as academically suitable to undertake high level VET study. You will need to provide:

  • A copy of your Australian Year 12 Certificate; OR
  • A copy of a certificate showing that you have been awarded a qualification at level 4 or above in the Australian Qualifications Framework (where the language of instruction was English). If you previously completed a Certificate IV or higher qualification at TAFE NSW, just let us know where and when you studied in your application; OR
  • Display competence at Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework in both reading and numeracy through an approved Language, Literacy and Numeracy test. We will let you know if this is required once you apply.
