Course Details

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who combine technical, creative and conceptual skills to create designs that meet client requirements and solve a range of visual communication challenges. Practice at this level is underpinned by application of design theory and practice and the ability to analyse and synthesise information from a range of sources to generate design solutions.

Practitioners may work in many different commercial and community contexts across both print and digital media.

To enter this qualification, individuals must provide evidence of their technical skills and ability to: - produce multiple examples of graphic design work that respond effectively to different design challenges - produce typography that supports the overall design solution - use graphic design industry software

Skills may have been acquired through personal or work experience, or through formal study.

**COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS**

A Certificate IV in Design (graphic) or equivalent study or work experience is a pre-requisite for entry into this course. Diploma Portfolio submission,
To assess your aptitude for the Diploma of Graphic Design, we require you to submit a portfolio of design works. Your portfolio should contain 6-10 pieces of work. These works will demonstrate your range of skills, both creative and technical, and include a variety of formats in both print and digital media incorporating type as well as image.

Submission format
Submit your portfolio as a low-resolution A3 landscape PDF.
File name: The file name must include year_Graphic_Diploma_ name_surname.
E.g. 2020_Graphic Diploma_Sam_Smith
On the first page include your full name, qualification/s or equivalent professional experience.
On following pages include examples of your work with a brief written explanation (max 50 words) for each piece describing the design process and (if applicable) the software used to create it. Alternatively, provide a link to an online portfolio.

Your portfolio must show evidence of:
1) A creative use of design elements and principles to produce graphic design solutions
2) Layout designs that successfully combine typography and image
3) The use of industry standard software ? proficiency with InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
4) Organisational, communication and presentation skills

To successfully complete this course, you will need:
To be able to successfully complete this course, you will need to prioritise time for design research and development and use time management skills to meet project deadlines. Projects may include the use of specialist design software, and require group work, and presentations.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a full time face to face course. You will need to attend approximately 16 hours of class, over 3 days a week, for 34 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 11.5 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 7.5 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including private study, research and class preparation.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

This course is designed for advanced entry and is suitable for students who already have a good working knowledge of design such as having completed formal study in a related area at Certificate IV level or above. As a requirement for entry into the Diploma, you will need to submit a portfolio of your design works.

This course is currently scheduled on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9.00am to 5.00pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process.

PAYMENT OPTIONS AND ASSISTANCE

This course is approved for a Commonwealth VET Student Loan (VSL). If you meet the VSL eligibility and academic suitability requirements, you are able to apply to the Commonwealth for a loan to cover all or part of your course fee. We will ask you whether you would like to apply for a VET Student Loan when you enrol and advise you of the process.

To complete your VET Student Loan application, you will need to provide:

  • Your Tax File Number (TFN). If you dont have a TFN, click here for information on how to apply for one. You can complete your loan application with a Certificate of Application for a TFN, but must provide your TFN as soon as it is issued. If you dont provide your TFN before your first census day, you will need to pay the tuition fees for that unit of study.
  • Your Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Number (CHESSN) ). If you have previously accessed a loan via the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP), either at TAFE or university, you will already have a CHESSN. You must use the same CHESSN whenever you access a student loan. If you dont have CHESSN, we will allocate one on your behalf.

To be eligible for a VET Student Loan, you will need to be assessed as academically suitable to undertake high level VET study. You will need to provide:

  • A copy of your Australian Year 12 Certificate; OR
  • A copy of a certificate showing that you have been awarded a qualification at level 4 or above in the Australian Qualifications Framework (where the language of instruction was English). If you previously completed a Certificate IV or higher qualification at TAFE NSW, just let us know where and when you studied in your application; OR
  • Display competence at Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework in both reading and numeracy through an approved Language, Literacy and Numeracy test. We will let you know if this is required once you apply.

If you intend to apply for a VET Student Loan, its important you know your student obligations.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

You will need to provide the following resources which is retained on completion of study:
Computers are provided for those classes where you are learning about software. It is recommended that you have your own laptop with industry standard software( Adobe creative cloud). Some materials and resources for printing and producing project work are provided onsite. There is no materials fee for this course. You may need to purchase your own additional materials and resources for project work.
