The nationally accredited Diploma of Music Industry (Sound Production) will take your career in sound design, music production and distribution further in a billion dollar industry. Strengthen your technical skill to create albums, work on live shows and explore the world of audio post production.

BE PREPARED

To be prepared for this course, it is highly recommended that you have completed your Certificate IV in Music Industry (Sound Production) or have equivalent skills and knowledge in Sound Production and/or Electronic Music Production (this may be assessed by an audition or submission of a portfolio).

It is also recommended that you have:

  • Digital literacy
  • A reasonable level of numeracy
  • Willingness to explore a range of music styles
  • A desire to collaborate
  • Some knowledge of audio theory
  • Some knowledge of signal path

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you are:

  • All applicants should have completed a Certificate III in Music Industry (Sound Production) or be able to demonstrate audio engineering ability to that level or higher using analog and/or digital recording studio equipment and PA systems.
  • Whilst there is no pre-requisite to study Diploma, we highly recommend that you complete Certificate III in Music Industry, or equivalent before attempting Diploma of Music Industry.

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • be interested in operating sound and studio equipment, microphones, computers, mixing consoles, etc. You would benefit from having a keen interest in recorded music, and being a part of the music production process.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a full time face to face course. You will need to attend approximately 16 hours of class, over 3 days a week, for 33 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 12 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 10.5 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including study, instrumental and vocal practice, assignment preparation, and industry events.


IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

Sound Production (Audio Engineering) is the focus of this Diploma of Music Industry
This course is designed for people who have completed the Certificate III in Music Industry (Sound Production), or have equivalent knowledge, skills and experience.

You will build much more advanced skills in running a recording studio, mixing records, running live sound, PA systems (analog and digital), coaching singers and musicians to capture the best performances from them, becomging a record producer and professional, all around audio engineer.

If you did not do the Certificate III in this topic, or have extensive knowledge and experience, we suggest you enrol in the Certificate III before doing Diploma.

-The Music section at Ultimo Campus has numerous Apple Mac computers, rehearsal rooms, pianos, guitars & drumkits. These facilities can be booked to use by enrolled students.

This course is currently scheduled on Tuesday from 9.30am to 12.30pm and Wednesday and Thursday from 9.30am to 4.30pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process.

PAYMENT OPTIONS AND ASSISTANCE

This course is approved for a Commonwealth VET Student Loan (VSL). If you meet the VSL eligibility and academic suitability requirements, you are able to apply to the Commonwealth for a loan to cover all or part of your course fee. We will ask you whether you would like to apply for a VET Student Loan when you enrol and advise you of the process.

To complete your VET Student Loan application, you will need to provide:

  • Your Tax File Number (TFN). If you dont have a TFN, click here for information on how to apply for one. You can complete your loan application with a Certificate of Application for a TFN, but must provide your TFN as soon as it is issued. If you dont provide your TFN before your first census day, you will need to pay the tuition fees for that unit of study.
  • Your Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Number (CHESSN) ). If you have previously accessed a loan via the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP), either at TAFE or university, you will already have a CHESSN. You must use the same CHESSN whenever you access a student loan. If you dont have CHESSN, we will allocate one on your behalf.
To be eligible for a VET Student Loan, you will need to be assessed as academically suitable to undertake high level VET study. You will need to provide:
  • A copy of your Australian Year 12 Certificate; OR
  • A copy of a certificate showing that you have been awarded a qualification at level 4 or above in the Australian Qualifications Framework (where the language of instruction was English). If you previously completed a Certificate IV or higher qualification at TAFE NSW, just let us know where and when you studied in your application; OR
  • Display competence at Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework in both reading and numeracy through an approved Language, Literacy and Numeracy test. We will let you know if this is required once you apply.
If you intend to apply for a VET Student Loan, its important you know your student obligations.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

Additional costs and materials required to successfully complete this course possibly include the use of a musical instrument outside of class hours, and computer or iPad to write and record music.

Music DAW software such as GarageBand, Logic Pro or Ableton Live are all useful for your studies and available for a reduced price as a student.

It may be beneficial to have access to a musical instrument. Many of these are available at TAFE to use during class hours.
