IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:

  • Completed a Certificate III or IV in Music Industry (Sound Production) or have equivalent skills and knowledge in sound production and/or electronic music production
  • Digital literacy, including some experience of a digital audio workstation (DAW) and programs like Logic, ProTools or Ableton
  • A reasonable level of numerical skills, including understanding frequencies and counting bars
  • A willingness to explore a range of music styles
  • The ability to collaborate with people in a team environment
  • Some knowledge of audio theory, including types of microphones, basic knowledge of frequencies, and volume
  • Some knowledge of signal path, such as you might find in a basic home studio or in a simple PA system

  • Although this course has no official entry requirements, we will need to make sure that you are able to undertake sound production tasks to the standard required for entry to a Diploma Level course. Before you start the course, you will need to provide evidence that you have the skills and knowledge to enter study at this level. We will contact you after you enrol with information about providing this evidence.

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • This is an online course of study. Students will need reliable internet connection and a late model computing device. The course requires students to undertake a range of sound recording and mixing projects. Students must have access to professional sound recording equipment, professional sound production software and other related technologies. If you have any doubts about the technology required please contact us to discuss your needs.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a Full Time course. You will need to attend approximately 15.7 hours of class, over 3 days a week, for 36 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 4 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 6 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including private study, research, skills practice, voluntary work in related areas, networking and other related entertainment industry activities.

This is an online course. During each week there are classes delivered using Microsoft Teams. In addition tutorial support sesions will be scheduled each week. The published timtable is indicative only. Recordings of the class sessions are available to students who are unable to attend each week.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

This qualification reflects a broad range of skills required to begin a career in the entertainment industry. It covers level 4 and level 5 skills in recording, editing and mixing music and creating sonic elements for media. It also covers entertainment industry and basic business skills. Successful students will have some existing experience in sound production and be able to read, write and have good numerical skills.

The way you learn may change during your enrolment to ensure the best learning experience or to keep you safe as COVID-19 restrictions change, and some of our face to face classes may change to online or virtual classroom learning. Also, to ensure that we keep you safe while studying, we may modify our face to face classes to meet physical distancing requirements and increased cleaning on campus. If work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of your course, there may be a modification or delay in the planned timeframe due to COVID-19 impacts. Be assured, we'll keep you informed every step of the way.

This is a Connected Learning course. This means you will join your teacher and other students in a virtual classroom and will participate in learning activities via video or web conferencing technology. Depending on the course, you may be able to join the class from your local TAFE NSW campus, or from anywhere with a good internet connection, such as your home. Much like a regular class, you will have scheduled times of attendance. The specific attendance requirements for this course are below.

This course is currently scheduled on Monday from 1.15pm to 4.15pm, Wednesday from 6.00pm to 7.30pm and Thursday from 9.30am to 4.15pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process.

PAYMENT OPTIONS AND ASSISTANCE

This course is approved for a Commonwealth VET Student Loan (VSL). If you meet the VSL eligibility and academic suitability requirements, you are able to apply to the Commonwealth for a loan to cover all or part of your course fee. We will ask you whether you would like to apply for a VET Student Loan when you enrol and advise you of the process.

To complete your VET Student Loan application, you will need to provide:

  • Your Tax File Number (TFN). If you dont have a TFN, click here for information on how to apply for one. You can complete your loan application with a Certificate of Application for a TFN, but must provide your TFN as soon as it is issued. If you dont provide your TFN before your first census day, you will need to pay the tuition fees for that unit of study.
  • Your Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Number (CHESSN) ). If you have previously accessed a loan via the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP), either at TAFE or university, you will already have a CHESSN. You must use the same CHESSN whenever you access a student loan. If you dont have CHESSN, we will allocate one on your behalf.
To be eligible for a VET Student Loan, you will need to be assessed as academically suitable to undertake high level VET study. You will need to provide:
  • A copy of your Australian Year 12 Certificate; OR
  • A copy of a certificate showing that you have been awarded a qualification at level 4 or above in the Australian Qualifications Framework (where the language of instruction was English). If you previously completed a Certificate IV or higher qualification at TAFE NSW, just let us know where and when you studied in your application; OR
  • Display competence at Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework in both reading and numeracy through an approved Language, Literacy and Numeracy test. We will let you know if this is required once you apply.

This course includes all resources needed to complete the course however students must supply note taking materials (notebook and pen/pencils) and personal data storage devices such as USB or portable hard drives. Most students use a portable computing device during their studies and whilst this may be advantageous it is not a requirement to complete the course assessments.
