Course Details

This qualification provides for specialisation in Music Business. Please contact TAFE NSW if you prefer to specialise in Performance, Composition or Sound Production.

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who have a sound theoretical knowledge base and use a range of specialised, technical or managerial competencies to plan, carry out and evaluate their own work, and/or that of a team, in their chosen field in the music industry.

National Standard for Licensing Persons Performing High Risk Work

The National Standard for Licensing Persons Performing High Risk Work applies to persons performing dogging and rigging work.

Completion of the following units is required for certification at either basic, intermediate or advanced levels:
CPCCLDG3001A Licence to perform dogging
CPCCLRG3001A Licence to perform rigging basic level
CPCCLRG3002A Licence to perform rigging intermediate level
CPCCLRG4001A Licence to perform rigging advanced level.

National Code of Practice for Induction for Construction Work

Sets and staging for some performances or events may fall within the definition of construction work. If so, people entering the construction site are required to complete the general induction training program specified by the National Code of Practice for Induction Training for Construction Work (Australian Safety Compensation Council, May 2007). This requirements is fulfilled by achievement of the unit:

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

It is assumed that you have literacy, numeracy and technical skills at Certificate IV level for success in this course. Contact your TAFE NSW campus if you have any questions about your suitability.

This Diploma was designed for those who have completed the Certifcate III in Music Industry (Music Business), or who have equivalent knowledge and experience.

Whilst there is no pre-requisite to study Diploma, we highly recommend that you complete Certificate III in Music Industry (Music Business), or equivalent before attempting this Diploma of Music Industry.

To successfully complete this course, you will need:
to have a keen interest in live & recorded music, managing artists, dealing with the music business and working with others.

This is a full time face to face. You will need to attend approximately 18 hours of class, over 3 days a week, for 17 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 11.5 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 8.5 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including study, research, assignment preparation, and industry events.

This Diploma was designed for those who have completed the Certifcate III in Music Industry (Business), or who have the equivalent knowledge and experience. If you have extensive knowledge and experience in Music Business, at least to the level of Certificate III, then you should take take course first.

You will gain advanced knowledge, skills and extensive experience in Managing and Developing Artists, Music Publishing, Managing Tours, promotions, generating social media engagement and monetizing it, raising money through crowd funding and applying for grants, producing music videos, handling contracts, building careers in wide variety of music industry areas and more.

This Diploma is designed for people who have completed the Certificate III in Music Industry (Music Business), or have equivalent knowledge, skills and experience.

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process.

This course is approved for a Commonwealth VET Student Loan (VSL). If you meet the VSL eligibility and academic suitability requirements, you are able to apply to the Commonwealth for a loan to cover all or part of your course fee. We will ask you whether you would like to apply for a VET Student Loan when you enrol and advise you of the process.

To complete your VET Student Loan application, you will need to provide:

  • Your Tax File Number (TFN). If you dont have a TFN, click here for information on how to apply for one. You can complete your loan application with a Certificate of Application for a TFN, but must provide your TFN as soon as it is issued. If you dont provide your TFN before your first census day, you will need to pay the tuition fees for that unit of study.
  • Your Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Number (CHESSN) ). If you have previously accessed a loan via the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP), either at TAFE or university, you will already have a CHESSN. You must use the same CHESSN whenever you access a student loan. If you dont have CHESSN, we will allocate one on your behalf.
To be eligible for a VET Student Loan, you will need to be assessed as academically suitable to undertake high level VET study. You will need to provide:
  • A copy of your Australian Year 12 Certificate; OR
  • A copy of a certificate showing that you have been awarded a qualification at level 4 or above in the Australian Qualifications Framework (where the language of instruction was English). If you previously completed a Certificate IV or higher qualification at TAFE NSW, just let us know where and when you studied in your application; OR
  • Display competence at Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework in both reading and numeracy through an approved Language, Literacy and Numeracy test. We will let you know if this is required once you apply.
If you intend to apply for a VET Student Loan, its important you know your student obligations.

You will need to provide the following resources which is retained on completion of study:
Additional costs and materials required to successfully complete this course possibly include the use of a computer or similar device. As a business student it would be beneficial to attend live gigs, shows and networking events in the music industry, which sometimes attact a cover charge.

Please bring a USB stick and a portable device, ie laptop or iPad if you have one.
