Course Details

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who combine specialised technical, creative and conceptual skills to plan and realise a body of work in one or more art forms. Mediums may include ceramics, drawing and illustration, painting, photomedia, printmaking, public art, sculpture, textile design, wood design, digital art and glasswork.

Practice at this level is underpinned by application of arts theory and history and the ability to critically analyse and synthesise information from a range of sources. Discourse around complex ideas is also required.

Visual artists may work in their own practice, or in a wide range of contexts across the arts, government, community or commercial organisations.

To enter this qualification, individuals must have the technical and organisational skills to conceptualise and create works in selected medium. Those skills and knowledge may have been acquired through experience in creative practice or through formal study.

Portfolio and interview

To enter this qualification, individuals must have the conceptual, technical and organisational skills to create and present work in their chosen creative form. Those skills and knowledge may have been acquired through experience in a creative field or through formal study.

To successfully complete this course, you will need to attend all delivery sessions and complete all exercises assigned to you by your teacher. This will enable to required skill development throughout the course of study. A rule of thumb is that how many hours you spend at TAFE should be equalled by the amount of practice you do outside of the face to face sessions.

Students will need to attend all studio delivery areas each week as well as undertake some online units. Specific studio areas are Painting, Drawing and Printmaking. Art History and Theory sessions are held on the half day.

This is also available as a full time course (completed in one year).

This is a face to face full time course. You will need to attend approximately 10.5 hours of class, over 2 days a week, for 2 years. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 7.3 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 5.3 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including research, self-directed learning and assessment preparation.


This course offering is designed for people who wish to develop their own art practitioner business, or those wishing to articulate into University-level qualifications in Visual Art, with the course providing a number of credits at University.

This face to face only delivery mode is targeted to students with a good command of drawing skills and an understanding of concepts. This course provided ability for students to develop their skills in Drawing, Painting and Printmaking, increasing their options for self-employment or tutoring within arts medium. It provides for extensive critical and analytical capabilities that are valuable in galleries and public display areas.

Our visual arts courses have articulation arrangements into a number of universities including National Art School, COFA, University of Western Sydney, Charles Sturt University and Newcastle University with a number of other universities (including in Victoria) who also offer recognition for TAFE study.


Enrolled TAFE NSW students are able to access Studiosity via their Student Portal, local LMS and libraries? websites. Studiosity provides personalised, live, online support and feedback after hours and over semester breaks on literacy, structure, referencing and grammar for all core subjects.

As a TAFE NSW student in this course, you will have access to:

This course is currently scheduled on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9.00am to 3.00pm, and Friday 9.00am to 1.00pm. Students will select 2 of 4 days to attend. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.


Materials and tools used to produce the creative work will be supplied including paints, drawing implements, paper, inks, drying racks, printing presses, printmaking tools, easels and donkeys, computers with access to internet, as well as frames and framing tools and mounts.

To complete your VET Student Loan application, you will need to provide:

  • Your Tax File Number (TFN). If you dont have a TFN, click here for information on how to apply for one. You can complete your loan application with a Certificate of Application for a TFN, but must provide your TFN as soon as it is issued. If you dont provide your TFN before your first census day, you will need to pay the tuition fees for that unit of study.
  • Your Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Number (CHESSN) ). If you have previously accessed a loan via the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP), either at TAFE or university, you will already have a CHESSN. You must use the same CHESSN whenever you access a student loan. If you dont have CHESSN, we will allocate one on your behalf.
To be eligible for a VET Student Loan, you will need to be assessed as academically suitable to undertake high level VET study. You will need to provide:
  • A copy of your Australian Year 12 Certificate; OR
  • A copy of a certificate showing that you have been awarded a qualification at level 4 or above in the Australian Qualifications Framework (where the language of instruction was English). If you previously completed a Certificate IV or higher qualification at TAFE NSW, just let us know where and when you studied in your application; OR
  • Display competence at Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework in both reading and numeracy through an approved Language, Literacy and Numeracy test. We will let you know if this is required once you apply.
