Course Details

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who combine specialised technical, creative and conceptual skills to plan and realise a body of work in one or more art forms. Mediums may include ceramics, drawing and illustration, painting, photomedia, printmaking, public art, sculpture, textile design, wood design, digital art and glasswork.

Practice at this level is underpinned by application of arts theory and history and the ability to critically analyse and synthesise information from a range of sources. Discourse around complex ideas is also required.

Visual artists may work in their own practice, or in a wide range of contexts across the arts, government, community or commercial organisations.

To enter this qualification, individuals must have the technical and organisational skills to conceptualise and create works in selected medium. Those skills and knowledge may have been acquired through experience in creative practice or through formal study.

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to the needs of local students and specific cohorts (like apprentices, fast-tracked students and online students). This means you will also need to meet any entry requirements listed below.

COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You are required to provide evidence prior to enrolment. Your ability to successfully complete the course will be assessed via an application portfolio of work presented at the interview. A Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) test at ACSF Level 4 as part of orientation or application processes to ensure the correct entry level.

To be able to successfully complete this course, you will need to attend class regularly and participate in the class activities. You will need to spend approximately 25 hours per week in total on your course work including face to face and self -directed learning.

A Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) level at ACSF Level 4 when commencing the course and basic computer skills. This will be assessed as part of your enrolment process. TAFE NSW will provide support for your LLN and other needs.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a full time course. You will need to attend approximately 16.5 hours of class a week, 3 days per week for 34 weeks. The timetable is subject to change and will be confirmed by your teacher on your first day.

As well as the in-class component, there is 6.4 hours of online study per week.

You can also expect approximately 10.9 hours of additional study each week including private study, research and assessment preparation outside of class hours.

This course is currently scheduled 3 days per week, Tuesday (10 am-4 pm), Wednesday (9 am-4 pm) and Thursday (9 am-3 pm).

PAYMENT OPTIONS AND ASSISTANCE

This course is approved for a Commonwealth VET Student Loan (VSL). If you meet the VSL eligibility and academic suitability requirements, you are able to apply to the Commonwealth for a loan to cover all or part of your course fee. We will ask you whether you would like to apply for a VET Student Loan when you enrol and advise you of the process.

To complete your VET Student Loan application, you will need to provide:

  • Your Tax File Number (TFN). If you dont have a TFN, click here for information on how to apply for one. You can complete your loan application with a Certificate of Application for a TFN, but must provide your TFN as soon as it is issued. If you dont provide your TFN before your first census day, you will need to pay the tuition fees for that unit of study.
  • Your Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Number (CHESSN) ). If you have previously accessed a loan via the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP), either at TAFE or university, you will already have a CHESSN. You must use the same CHESSN whenever you access a student loan. If you dont have CHESSN, we will allocate one on your behalf.
To be eligible for a VET Student Loan, you will need to be assessed as academically suitable to undertake high level VET study. You will need to provide:
  • A copy of your Australian Year 12 Certificate; OR
  • A copy of a certificate showing that you have been awarded a qualification at level 4 or above in the Australian Qualifications Framework (where the language of instruction was English). If you previously completed a Certificate IV or higher qualification at TAFE NSW, just let us know where and when you studied in your application; OR
  • Display competence at Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework in both reading and numeracy through an approved Language, Literacy and Numeracy test. We will let you know if this is required once you apply.
